I have heard of some hotels having pressure plates or something to that like that will sense if any of the bottles or such are removed, and the room subsequently charged.

Housekeeping will check the minibar every day - if they find you've removed anything (and put your own stuff in), you will be charged - because that's the rules. If they offer you to have your minibar officially emptied and repurposed as a fridge for a small fee, that's quite generous, and we'd very much prefer if you took that option instead of trying to circumventing your contract.

Sambers:
Sent them an email, 5 euros is nothing and I'd gladly pay that in order to have cold drinks and be able to stock some other goodies :)
Thanks for the heads up!

I have also been in touch with the hotel. And as a mild shock I was informed the hotel will be placing a pre-authorized charge on my card for 50/100 euros a night as a "guarantee for extras", that is 300-600€ essentially locked away directly from my account balance since I only have debit card. This will basically take away all flexibility from my con budget.
I'll have to see if emptying the minibar could be used a negotiation point for a lower deposit amount.

This will probably come as a surprise to many, since I at least didn't spot any information about such charges when I was making my reservation.

That, and not allowing any charges to the room, should help bring that right down.

Cheetah:
Check with your bank. In the case of debit cards, authorization holds can fall off the account (thus rendering the balance available again) anywhere from 1–5 days after the transaction date depending on the bank's policy.
