Title: Motor Furs
Post by: Shep on 26.02.2009, 00:39:19
I have an idea that quite a few members of the Motor Furs Livejournal community will be in attendance at this year's EF with their vehicles, including myself. Is anyone interested in an informal 'bonnets-up' meet in the car park? ;)

Post by: Fawks Beaumont on 26.02.2009, 08:42:41
If you do have a mini-meet, it would be better to have it in the lower parking lot.  The upper lot is just a long line of parking spots and fills up quickly, the lower lot has a LOT more room to shove off your rides and it's only about 200m from the hotel itself.

I like this idea, and suggest that maybe someone *looks at shep as it was his suggestion :P * pops a post about the idea in the motor_furs LJ. I know there's going to be quite a few petrolheads in the UK convoy, and I've seen some good looking cars from across the continent in the car park in the previous couple of years, so it could certainly be an interesting meetup.

Mayhaps if something can be arranged in time before the conbook/timetable is printed, we could maybe arrange a slot on the timetable handout, so that everyone knows when it will be?

(I don't know what I'll be driving over yet, I should know in a couple of months, hopefully before Confuzzled ^.^;  )

Indeed. I can think of at least six Motor Furs members off the top of my head who will be at the convention with their cars :)

Hm... What is Motor Furrs about?

Well, we're mentioning cars, vehicles, bonnets, car parks, Jeeps, Volvos, driving.......so it must be about electric motor-driven vegetable salad bowl collections! :P

I'd be half-tempted to show my car off, but sense everything is stock, it would just be showing off an American engine. :P

Who on the staff would we need to speak to so as to get a mention in the conbook/timetable once a date and time has been agreed on?

@ Fawks Beaumont: Some of us *like* stock American engines, what have you got? (I'll only be showing off a "Stock" Japanese engine :P )

If someone wants to organise it, i'll put it in the conbook.

It's a 3.0L V6 221HP, can't remember the make on it right now.
Title: Re: Motor Furs

It's a Ford Duratec 30 (or Mazda AJ if you're into JDM). Commenly found in most Ford V6 powered cars as well as the Jaguar S-Type, Lincoln LS, Mazda 6 and Ford Mondeo ST220.

The last one being fun to drive  8)

@Nachtfuchs: You have PM :)

@Fawks Beaumont: It has a V, therefore it makes all the right noises, bring it along :P

To everyone else: I was thinking that sometime between 11am and 2pm would be a good time, as this gives people time to wake up and get breakfast/get rid of hangovers, and should hopefully be before any major events or socialising starts in the afternoon. I've asked Nightfox to see if there's a day when this meetup would clash with the least amount of events (although given EF's busy schedule, this is no easy task for him, sorry ^.^; ). Any thoughts from anyone else on times they'd like considered? I'd cautiously advise against Sunday though, as most people will probably still be dead from the BigBlueDance :P

I'm going to have to give The Volvo a very thorough clean under the bonnet, but I'll wait until around June or July when the weather is warm and dry before I do ;)

Hi guys,

I'm new to all of this, but if you don't mind I would / could join you. I just hope my Ascona will be allright in due time (Cavalier MK2 for the UK ;-) ), otherwise I'll attend with my Vectra (Cavalier MK3). :-)
Title: Re: Motor Furs
Post by: kyyanno on 30.04.2009, 16:16:07
Any and all are welcome to attend, with or without their cars :)

All that is needed now is to decide on a day and time *pokes a busy Nachtfuchs for input, then hides* :P

I'm thinking that perhaps Friday, 11am to 12pm/1pm-ish, depending on how many attend and how long people hang around for, would be a good time? Gives people time to wake up of a morning and sober up/have breakfast etc., before heading to the lower car park area, which is where we should aim to hold the meet as there is more room.

I'd also suggest that we stick to some basic rules, such as no dangerous driving - wheelspins, burnouts etc, as this will cause unnecessary noise nuisance to other attendees and possible damage to other vehicles if there is a loose road surface from flying gravel/stones etcetera. Engine revving, whilst showing off the noise of the car (especially if tuned), should be kept to a minimum, no constant/extended bouncing off the rev limiter - once again for noise concerns. Also, people may leave cars/windows open for others to take a look inside, don't just take this as an invite to climb in - please speak to the owner before leaning on/getting into any vehicle. I would suggest that unless with the car, owners keep keys with them on their person at all times when away from the vehicle.

@ All: If you think of any other safety/behaviour rules, please post them here so that we can keep track of them, and so that the EF staff can put them with the event description if there is enough room for an entry in the conbook.

@Nightfox: Is this a good time to avoid clashes with any other major events? Also, is there any chance you could slot it into the con timetable, and would there be the possibility of a small description including safety rules?

I got one. If someon has got a small disco built in their car, try to keep the music at an acceptable limit. This little gathering is just to watch and talk about cars and not to show off your way of killing your hearing.

Yeah I'd be game for meeting some of the gang. However I can't bring my own ride (as its a bit to expensive to ship it from California) Hopefully AVIS will give me a nice rental to drool over. XD

For the record, my ride is a Honda Fit (called the Honda Jazz in Europe) 1.5.

Well, if an old Volvo 244GL (1983) in it's original state (so no special engine tricks, just the good old indestructable B23A) is worth seeing, I'll be joining. Maybe provide a corner for the 'classics'? I've seen a nice old Ford (orange-black) on the parking lot at EF13-EF14... And maybe some other furs might have an 'oldie' (A DS would be awesome, or an old Benz 380, or whatever that is older then 20 years) capable of driving them to EF?!?

@ Jasper: No Idea, I'm not planning any layout as such until I see the area and how many cars turn up.

Feel free to sort a banner out, but don't forget that we're going to have nearly 20-odd cars in the convoy this year!

I'd like to see the 244 join the gathering. I was going to bring The Volvo with me, but my latest acquisition, The Volvo 2 (a 1997 V70 2.5) has aircon and cruise control and is much better on the motorway than it ever could be:

I remember seeing that orange Taunus at EF13. I was surprised it was still running, given the state it was in ;)

I've seen quite a few around the Dutch border with Germany, along with lots of pre-1981 Volvo 245s which looked showroom-fresh. Pity that it's very rare to see the Cortina, the Taunus' UK equivalent any more :(

For those interested in this event, there is now an informative topic in the "Programming" section of the forum, which includes the description that will be going into the conbook, and also some safety rules/guidelines, which won't be in the conbook due to space restrictions. Please be sure that you read these if you intend to come along, as they are for your safety as well as everyone else's :)

1) You'd need rubber track covers for road use
2) I doubt you'd find any insurers that would cover you for that long a distance road use in both the UK *AND* Europe
3) Have fun trying to get one on a Ferry, as you won't fit on the Eurotunnel :P
4) I hope you've won the lottery to fund the fuel costs

Nice idea, would be fun to see, but I'd advise against it, tbh. It would require a lot of forwards planning with authorities, which you really don't have the time to do now.

I'd like to see one of those weird ex-DDR origami tractors that I've seen in the countryside around Suhl to roll up. Failing that, a Trabant or a Wartburg would be nice. Maybe we could set up some sort of photo opportunity next to the old Robur RB21 bus if it's still there?

I have access to/can borrow a road-legal IFV if thats any help...It'll fit on the Eurotunnel too, about the same width as a truck and significantly lower. All it needs is a huge supply of petrol/diesel/whiskey?! I've heard it runs on pretty much anything flammable the guy can find, hehe. Its a wee bit rusty, but he claims its got an MOT an everything!

Title: Re: Motor Furs
Post by: kyyanno on 30.07.2009, 22:22:22
No programming ideas as such yet, I thought that, weather dependant, people could park up in some sort of configuration that best shows off as many cars as possible, and it would be a place for people to talk about all things automobilia. Might be a good idea if drivers want, to print off a sheet with some of the details about their car, and put it in the windscreen perhaps?

If anyone wanted to look up a possibly route to go for a short drive (further up the Ringberg road and over into the villages in the hill summits is nice, Utlah and I drove that last year on a spare day before the Con) then feel free to post or bring details.

All I've done is organise a meetup time and place for people, so that they know when to get together. From there, it's up to you what you do :)

I'd bring my Simca Millé RallyE 2 but unfortunately it's broken to the point of being unrepairable.

That's a pity, as I'd liked to have seen it. What happened to it?

Last weekend i prepared both cars so i can decide which one to take depending on the weather.

So far the forecast looks ok and i think i take the limo, it needs a ride anyway since i kept it in the garage for the last six months.

I must warn you that I'll be over your car like a rash, as the W116 is one of my favourite German cars of all time :)

Looks like I'll be taking home a large amount of photos from this. Hmm, now should I bring a notepad too to note details so I can put makes to photos....

I think it's best heh.
