Title: Attention please, attention please!
Post by: SlyCat on 10.09.2006, 23:56:40
Thanks again for a great con.  It was my first EF, and one thing that kinda stuck from the con was the frequent amusing announcements (I think by Somewolf?).  I just thought it'd be cool if he could record a sound sample or two as it could work as a ringtone :P

And your current ringtone is "Crazy Frog", right?  ;D

Such cheek!  I hated that frog.  Nah, I just thought it could be an amusing novelty for those in the know :)

[...] amusing announcements [...] as a ringtone

good to hear you had fun as well :-)

i'm somehow doomed to be the anouncement-dude since ef9  .. where the 'soundsystem' was my loud voice *G*

anyways
you have to come up with something to make everyfur listen
i got lots of reports telling me that folks were silent listening 'cause they waited for the punchline ...
now where my concept got revealed i need a new one for ef13 ;-)

and i'm still hiding from '2'
even though it wasn't my idea to call for him in a harsh voice to be shot in the courtyard  *wildly giggles*

oh btw: so far there are no plans for producing  "ef - the ringtone collection(tm)"

me is only available live at cons, come and see ..err: hear

Yesh!  The "Attention please, attention please" announcements were just the most geeky fun I had at the con, loved how we all just hushed up to hear em.  Great job Somewolf!! *hugs*

Distracting you from what you were doing and made you listen to the irresistible hypnotic voice announcing that the Art Show will close in 15 minutes? I think that was the plan ;D

EDIT: Multiple layers of quoting, yay!

Distracting me from what I was doing, yes, and making me think "goodness, can't he at least *try* to have a less embarassing accent"... :P

Hehe.. we even made fun of him in the pawpet show. In all the rehearsals the North Cothelstone Emergency Line had a more angry voice.. and then, in the main performance... threw me right off my poke role, had to make a comment after that, with everyone backstage staring at me (giving me the LOOK!) for not sticking to the script again *laughs*

The Furry Intelligence Agency would like to point out that ther is no such thing as an FIA. We would further like to note that we unfortunately cannot give any statement on the accuracy of the Wikifur entry (http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/F.I.A.) on this topic.
Title: attention....
Post by: Lions_ on 15.09.2006, 12:28:29
i didnt think it was amusing. it was more just annoying.
every time you're talking to someone about something important, there came an anouncement   1 minute "attention please" in repeat and then 3 seconds of message.
Just... Annoying.
Title: Re: Attention please, attention please!

"why wasn't there any kind of anouncement so i'd know what's going on"

^--- a question every ef about 1 jillion times

> Just... Annoying
yes, this too

what to learn?
you can't do it right!

everyfur is invited to do it right(er) though, please join the team with your ideas and make things better :-)

if someone thinks there were too many anouncements, for let's say the artshow, please complain to the respective manager ... and so on

otherwise ...see above  .. you are invited to come up with an idea on how to inform everyfur who may need an information
the not existing fia just isn't that far to implant abn's   (attendee brain networkchips)   .. .. yet

thanks for your patience and your understanding of the needs of a small group for informations :-P

edit: smoothened the wording about the needs of the majority

Who needs the F.I.A. when you have WikiFur collecting detailed information about everyone in the fandom (http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Category:People)? There are 1750 people articles and counting, including a rather detailed one on somewolf himself (http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/somewolf) . . . ;D

If it is, that's a concern, as the same people run Wikipedia as well . . . hmm, maybe that explains the extensive entries on the furry fandom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom) and related topics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Furry). They've obviously been monitoring Kage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Conway) during his trips to EF, too!

Not technically the same people, actually... Wikia and the Wikimedia Foundation happen to share a number of members, but they're otherwise completely separate entities. But of course, I have no doubts that the FIA is secretly controlling the latter, too. ;)

Now who's spoiling the conspiracy? ;)

In truth, they are separate organizations, but there are several top people involved in both. In fact, there is a discussion about this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikia#Financial_conflict_of_interest.3F) that just started at Wikipedia. I spend quite a lot of time with the Wikia staff (they paid for me to present at Wikimania (http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proceedings:LP1)), and I happen to know that Wikipedia and Wikia were both started on the very same server, ross.bomis.com (at different times, obviously). If that's not suspicious I don't know what is! *grin*

I should really have dropped by when I lived in the UK, but I didn't know about it. Maybe next year, if I have the time free. Alas, there is not as much holiday here in the US as in Europe!

Oh? Interesting - I don't remember the absolutely earliest days of Wikipedia (I only did my first edits - that I can still find, at least - at the very end of 2001 and didn't sign up until in May 2003), but wasn't Wikia founded much later, after Wikipedia was already occupying several servers? (It was on three when I started in 2003...)

Of course, I don't actually *know*, but I always was under the impression that Wikia was only started long after Bomis was not directly involved with Wikipedia anymore. :)

Yes, this is the case. It moved off Bomis servers after it started getting significant funding. Wikia was initially just the name of Jimbo's company that created Wikiasari, a "user-directed search" project, something like a directory. That project never really got going (like Nupedia). In late 2004 they started Wikicities instead, once it became clear that Wikipedia could not fulfill the needs of all wiki users. I joined on Christmas 2004, about a month after they started their first wikis, and have been involved since then. Earlier this year Wikicities became Wikia instead, as people got confused as to whether it was wikis about cities.

Hehe, sorry somewolf . . . I should get going now, I have work to do. ;)

OK... sorry. We kinda got sidetracked here, I guess. :) That being said, the only thing I'd personally say should be changed (IMO; YMMV) would be that the announcements are taking too long. Something like "attention please, the art show's gonna close in 15 minutes! I repeat, the art show is going to close in 15 minutes!" shouldn't take more than 20 seconds or so (a number I just made up, admittedly, but you'll catch my drift); at EF12, the announcements always seemed to draw out forever. :P

That, and the accent... it's OK if you've just got one, of course, but it very much sounded like it was intentional this year. ;)

Well I liked somewolf's announcements, though I'd have to agree on the speed issue.

Having said that, I seem to remember reading that "best practice" for doing PAs is to speak around 30% slower than you normally would. For an event like Eurofurence, I would say that doing so is particularly important, given that most of the attendees don't have English as their first language.

Cheers,

Southie

you have to come up with something to make everyfur listen

unfortunately it took sometimes about 40 seconds until all that  "Attention please" was over.
so most of the people already stopped listening when the actual anouncement was finally spoken.

If that's how you feel, it may indeed be better if you don't do the announcements anymore. I mean... everyone really appreciates the time and energy you put into helping out at the con (I do, at least), but being able to deal with the fact that people may have suggestions for changes and improvements seems like a rather crucial thing to me, too. It's not only unrealistic to expect people to keep quiet all the time and say that everything's perfect even though they have criticisms, it also will make it impossible to actually improve things by addressing concerns (one way or another). :P
Title: Re: Attention please, attention please!

Then you obviously didn't do a better job :)

well, mostly because if someone does something, he is told by EVERYONE that he is a looser and did the worse job ever.
then you see someone else doing that job, also quite good and he is also told that he did the worse job ever....
doesnt matter what was done
doesnt matter who said it.
fact is, whatever you do, someone expects something else but still cant tell you WHAT you did wrong.

and whats even worse is when someone tells you that you did something wrong that wasnt even your job or noone told you that you should do it.
But it doesnt matter if someone told you to do it or not. it wasnt done, its your fault and so youre incompetent.

I wasn't going to comment in this thread, but this remark offends me. To clarify this to everyone who reads this: Lions doesn't do "any jobs" at EF any more, because I clearly told him quite a while ago that his service is no longer required in a responsibile position. Lions, you're welcome to visit Eurofurence as a guest, maybe help out as a gopher, and I don't hold any bad grudges against you. Please just don't go around, and talk like you do, because if you don't receive any thankful comments, that's not caused by anything but your own behaviour, even though you might not see it that way.

(That's all I'm going to say, it's already way too personal, but I didn't see any way to clear this up without getting as specific as I did, sorry.)

Case closed.
