Title: Honest Feedback about external restaurants here please.
Post by: Mystifur on 07.09.2010, 01:40:53
Hi there,
as some of you noticed, we provided you with a tourist guide flyer, that also had a couple of partner restaurants listed.
To further improve our recommendations and your experience in Magdeburg, I would like to hear your comments about your visits to these or other restaurants. Good and bad feedback is welcome.

Anything from "I've been to....
-and they where very welcoming
-food was great/bad
-they offered specials..
-and there have been the following problems...
- they did / didn't stick to the special offers in the flyer.

Anything that is helpful is welcome.
Please keep comments as objective as possible and give reference if possible.

Thank you for your support. :)

Negative feedback on the chinese restaurant 'next to the hotel', it's a fancy looking place and it looks tidy, but on Sunday we had to wait for our food from 19:00 until 20:50, and by then it still was not served. I even went to ask the waitress about it and the response I received was "You must patience 20 minutes".
A handful of us decided to pay for the drinks we had whilst playing the waiting game, and left shortly after.

Note: I did go there with a small group earlier and the food was served reasonably quick that time, and it DID TASTE DELICIOUS.
Note: I'm not sure wether this one was on the flyer.

House of Steaks Ortega:

Good steaks, very reasonable prices.

Fried potatoes: Don't.

But: Refused to give promised special offer (free coffee/espresso after dinner) to groups below 10 people (at least on Thursday, don't know about later days).

The Italian pizza and pasta place next to the hotel.

Lovely food, service was okay, waiting times a bit lengthy at the time, but the food was great.
Especially for the price, they also did the 10% discount thing on Sunday when we went there.

Greek restaurant: Asteria (http://www.asteriadergrieche.de/)

Great food, free alcoholic appetizer drink (Ouzo, yum!) and swift service, even for a large group, and all of that at a very reasonable price, especially for the huge amount of food you get.

I second Vixus. The Asteria greek restaurant behind the hotel had tasty dishes (their gyros was YUM!), and theyre were very welcoming, even had a discount prepared for EF attendees, which was awesome. I wholeheartly suggest this restaurant for the next year.

I really enjoyed the breakfast sunday morning in the italian restaurant near the hotel, fresh warm croissants and bread, nice coffee.

One of my favourites was the Asia Place in the shopping mall (not the buffet one, I don't like buffet's).
Waiting time was not long, food was great, especially the crispy duck, oh omnomnom!

We also went to the Italian place, which was very good. Waiting time was resonable. House of steaks made  us wait for our food for more then 1 hour, our order got lost. Eventually we got it and it was very tasty (spareribs!)

I'm quite content with all the food places, good food and very cheap!

I've only been to the Italian restaurant "La Piazza" next to that fountain behind the hotel.
The food was excellent and made with fresh pasta. Prizes were also ok.
Some meals were more than enough, some could have been more. The waiter was amazing and we had so much fun we cried. (He told me he won't be there next year but the restaurant worthes a visite for the food anyway!)
The owner even came to the hotel on Saturday after closing to thank the chairman for the great guests we were.
Opening times are daily from 11 to 24. Sitting outside is possible.

On Sunday we had brunch at the Café Flair, right next to the McDonald's.
http://www.cafe-flair.de/
They offer brunch on Sunday and holiday - very good food in lovely atmosphere for 7,90 Euro.
The mozarella-tomato-salad was yummy and they had very good cheese there.

Very good ice cream we had at the Rialto, next to the "other" huge shopping center Allee-Center in the Breiter Weg 19. Five Minutes to walk from the Hotel.

And best Doener I had since long time was at the Bingöl Grill in the City-Carré next to the hotel at the entrance to the Kaufland supermarket. Gosh, that was gooood!
The Asia Snack on the other side was also nice and offered good quality.

We were twice to the "ALEX" restaurant/bar (out of the rear hotel entry and then turn left, 2mins to walk).
They have outdoor tables too, in front of the fountain.

It was really good: broad choice of  tasty food (Salad,Steak,Schnitzel,Burger,...), quite inexpensive and good cocktails.

I second the good feedback about the "Asteria" greek and the chinese in the mall, yummy.

There is really no need to buy anything, food or drinks, from the hotel.

The japanese/asian restaurant Vixus mentioned was good one day, horrendous the next!

Their sushi were delicious, which made me go back for more the day after, only to have to wait 25 minutes to be allowed to order, and learn then that they were out of sushi (even if they were still serving them to the table next to us)..(they also pretended to be fully booked for our group of 14, which resulted in us splitting party, only to discover once upstairs that there actually WAS place for 14 people....o_O)

We ordered something else, they mixed up my order (putting on coriander, even if i specifically requested it to be removed upon order) and then, as Vixus said, we had to wait nearly 2 hours to get our dishes.

Their excuse was that two people from the staff were missing, cause it was Sunday.

Well... The italian pizza place next to the crossing in front of the mall was very good, staff was nice and pizzas were big!! i'll definitely go there again

I had a good experience with the restaurant just at the side of the hotel, the Asian place that gave the 20% discount. The food was very tasty indeed!

The steak house had tasty food, but I believe it may have given me some kind of food poisoning or stomach upset. Within a couple of hours of having a schnitzel there, I had vomited it up and was very sick for about 12 hours afterwards. Not good at all as it kinda ruined my con, since I had a Dealer's table (I was lucky enough to have my boyfriend to look after it for me!) and had to catch up on an absolute ton of commission work in the evening.

We also visited a Chinese restaurant that is a few minutes walk further away from the hotel than the fountain, the one with the highly decorated poles outside the front door. It was very pleasant with nice prices but long wait times despite being very quiet.

The Maritim's restaurant was just far too overpriced. The Maritim burger was okay, and the tomato soup was delicious, but the prices were just awful.

There's a very nice place called Sushi Moon a bit south of the hotel, near Hasselbachplatz, which has a sushi buffet thing going on on Thursdays. Can't really do anything wrong with that - the only problem with that one is that Google Maps somehow thinks it's up north by the university.  ::)

For non-evening meals, the Asia Snack and Papaya restaurants in the mall were quite okay. There's also this German eatery in the mall right behind Bingöl Döner, forgot what it's called - their breakfast was quite affordably priced (coffee & bread roll for €2), but don't even think about asking for a currywurst before 11:00. :P

as said, lovely pizza, good prices and ok service-time.

the BBQ at the hotell was realy bad. accidently got in to the chicken-line (cuz there was no info). never ever tasted such bad chicken, EVER.
later in the week took a maritim-burger cuz it was closest at hand. tasted sour.
both were overly expencive to.

pizza-hut, bit long waiting-time, but realy nice food, ok price. recomend strongly to take the large pizza and to take like ½ of it home to the hotell with you again, perfect breakfast or whatever other meal u want it to be (takes a lot of tricking to get it in to the fridge tho :P )

the hotell BAR was just a joke... ridiculusly expencive and just luck if you actually got what you payed for.

otherwise i got a lot of food from the local store, and that worked perfectly fine that to.
and they sold alcohol to, so you actually could drink a bit in the room, and then go down and take something to take a beer that u could walk around with for a while

I can agree! BTW, one small disadvantage, they give 10% discount only if a table paid together.

Bingöl Döner Grill: http://www.bingoel-doener.de/

Very friendly, very clean, and for a small budget, you get your food in a great quantity and also quality. 6,90€ for a great chicken-Döner-plate, and you weren't hungry for many hours.

I was there with Malti at the "Hasselbachplatz", and she gave up - it was too much of food, but very delicious.
 :D

In the City-Carré, there was also a good station für cheap food, called "Papaya", and also in a great quantity and quality. Fried noodles with crunchy Duck ~ round about 6€. Same like the Bingöl-Döner-Grill.

Both locations were very friendly, cheap and quick.

There's a Croation restaurant "Kroatia" near the cathedral.. it served some of the best grilled meats I have had the pleasure to taste in a long time. The ambiente is very nice, it's very professional and clean, the people are friendly, and the food doesn't cost all that much. 12 Euros for a platter of mixed grilled meats (Cevapchichi, grilled bacon, grilled chicken, etc.) and about 15 for a platter of mixed grilled steaks and filets.

This restaurant gets 5 NOM's from me!

On the other side of the train station is a Schnitzel place called "Schnitzel Tempel". We invaded them on Friday with between 30 and 40 furs, and on my reservation they basically closed the entire thing to the normal public, ignored their normal opening hours and switched side dishes from per-meal to bringing out bowls of various sides for each table. The food was tasty, and they managed to serve all the meals in a reasonably short time frame. Asking around, I think most furs taking part in the Schnitzelfest were pretty happy with the place and want to go there again next year ^.^ Oh, and doco had his picture taken as one of the Schnitzel Kings for eating a 1kg XXL-Schnitzel in the record time of 37 minutes.

The asian style restaurant in the City Caree - I think it was the Papaya - was quite good.

ALEX (backside of hotel and to the left) was great: limited selection of food, but very good, cheap and could handle our group size as well (went there on sunday and monday)

Palazzo: (went there on wednesday) The second room was completely full with furs, most of them openly displaying their lanyards/badges. Took quite some time to get the food (understandable, since there were so many of us), but also did take some time to even get the drinks. Refused to offer us the 10% discount, at first seeming to be not aware of it, then telling us that we should have told them in advance and now "he had already printed the invoice".

Kaufland: good beverages for cheap prices ;)

*purrrrr*

Mainly was at 4 eatin places besides the hotel itself

Greek restaurant: Asteria, had great food, not too long a wait and great staff, tho abit high prices.

The pizza hut was also great, in all ways imaginable except abit crowded, but that usualy jusy means the food is good ^^

The House of steaks, long wait, lots of wrong orders, messy and impolite negative staff and  the food was at a 3 of 6, ok not good. tho how a place with 50 gram steaks can be a steak house I will never know :P I was still hungry afther eating, but place was disapointing so I got some mc donalds afther.

Dont remember name but a small place close too hotel too the right out front door, had breakfast there, was okey, but abit negative staff anf very slow... how can bread and some coffe take over and hour?

I can't believe no-one mentioned the restaurant inside the hotel yet.

Tempted to try? Just Don't.

1: Rediculously expensive
2: Staff acts like robots
3: You will constantly be watched
4: Too 'high class' to enjoy, you will feel awkward.

hmm, Expensive yes, about same prices as we got home in norways... witch is insane by european standards :P
Still it was nice and cosy enough in a group atlest, so was my secound favorite place.

Anyways I think this is for external resturant feedback. :)

The Italian pizza and pasta place "Palazzo":
Ate there twice. Food is all right, had better, had worse. Defenitly perfect considering the price, which is extremly low for German standards. They were not prepared for crowds on Wednesday, as it took 2 hrs to be served. On top of that, our table ordered FIRST (at a time when the other tables around us were empty) and got the food LAST (as the other 6 tabels filled up quickly after our order, all getting their food before us).

Chinese take away in mall in front of Maritim:
Great! Tasty food, extreme big portions, low price, fast.

Coffee shop in mall behind Maritim:
Tasty drinks, plus free usage of Internet Terminal (handy for people like me who do not own a note book).

Cafe Hansen (next road crossing the Maritim, Ernst Reuter Alee):
Had all you can eat breakfast buffet for 5€, including coffee, jams, cold cuts, cheese, tarts, egs etc.

The Sushi Moon place that doco mentioned was superb. Was there three times :P (There's no such thing as too much sushi!)

I also went to the Sportsbar next to the hotel called "The Fan", but when we mentioned the offer of an Schnitzel or burger and drink for 8.99 Euros they acted as if they didn't know about the offer which was weird. They apparently didn't even have schnitzels!

The Palazzo right next to the hotel serves really great food. It's not the best food I've ever eaten, but the value you get for your money is excellent. They serve very good milkshakes. We ate there for breakfast and lunch several times. Waiting times are not great, but alright. The service is mediocre, but nothing to get upset about. They seemed to adapt to their new customers over the days and grew more friendly.

The Sushi place on to the left side of the hotel has very good food at moderate pricing but the waiting times were not aceptable. We waited for 1 1/2 hours before we finally got to eat on Saturday and another 15 minutes for the bill.

Right next to the hotel on the left is the "One" cocktail bar. Drinks are priced between 5-8 Euros and the menu is very elaborate. The drinks are tasty (yes, you can actually taste what is says on the menu), are of standard size and contain alcohol. The service was friendly, but we sometimes had to wait a little long to get our drinks. They are pretty strict on their "open end" closing times and we saw them turn away a group of at least 10 people at 2am on friday.

Yeah some places in eastern Germany have incredibly cheap breakfast buffets, and the quality is often quite superb.

I remember one for 4.44 EUR in Halle an der Saale. Even had Salmon and fresh omelets.

Anyways I think this is for external resturant feedback. :)

Someone told me that the restaurant was not part of the hotel itsself even though it was located in the same building. The same applies for the 'center bar' where a cup of coffee was 80 cents cheaper than in that particular restaurant where coffee was 3 euro's.

Alex had an all you can eat breakfast. It was at the fountain, as some people have mentioned. I enjoyed it and I also had my first orangina there.

The chinese restaurant next to the fan bar wasn't good. I had to wait too long and they didn't bothered about the discount.

my favorite Bar was Cocktail Bar One right next to the hotel where they had a cocktail happy hour on Thursday from 8 pm to 10 pm. The place was packed, so I had to wait a half hour for my last cocktail, but I paid 3 Euro's for every cocktail at that hour. That was awesome! Reasonable prices of cocktails ranging from 4,90 to 7 Euro. And food is cheap, too. I just tried the French Fries and it could fill ones stomach.

I went to the House of Steak twice (Wednesday night with Korrok and her Fella -sorry to hear it caused your illness :(- and again on Saturday after the Motor meet) It is reasonably priced and I found the staff pretty nice, food was served in a decent time for my liking as it did give time to chat and enjoy ourselves. Though when we asked for the coffee offer on Saturday we were told they weren't doing any offers. (Did get complimented on our tails by a random German customer hehe)

Myself and Meyou had a slice of pizza each from this pizza stall in the Mall behind the Maritim one night, 3 euro a slice which were pretty big. Tasty and filled the gap for some time.

The snack bar in the Hotel I gotta say wasn't too bad, 2.50 for a curryvurst isn't too much though I would have liked to have seen something with it like chips or rice perhaps.

And that's me done for food reviews this year ^.=.^

I highly recommend "La Piazza", the italian restaurant near the fountain. Very friendly people, ultra fast service and delicious pizza. They were also very nice to my dog and gave him a bowl with water.

The greek restaurant "Asteria" was ok too, excellent salad and fast service, but I had better Tiropitakia at other restaurants before.

I can't second that experience. I was at the "Qilin" myself during that time and the orders of our table of eleven were dealt with the friendlyness and swiftness we had encountered the visits before. I guess, it highly dependended on where you were seated also what exactly you ordered at that time: The service personel at our table did point out, they were overrun and had to take various set dishes off the menue, as they had or were running out of ingredients rapidly. My guess is, they were running on their "normal weekend & calm Sunday" stock, instead of "OMG The Furries are Next Door!" stock. Never the less the food was excellent, the place was clean, service friendly and 20% off when you displayed your Conbadge is not to be sneezed at - you !did! have to display it though!

A different kettle of fish was the Italian Place "Palazzo" down the road. Whereas I don't have any complaints about the quality of the food (their Brunch/Breakfast set menues are well worth the money) the service lacked panache and friendlyness. Apparently one of the people serving was up to the challenge with a smile, whilst others couldn't cope at all. Upon my visit I seemed to be out of luck, the man serving my table being condesenting, snappy and at times downright rude to the women accompaning me, bossing them around when taking their orders. 10% off upon displaying Badge is a cool offer, but it wasn't enough to make me welcome. That experience was the reason for me to give the "Qilin" a try the next day.

We went to the Palazzo twice, the Wenzel once and ate at the Chinese buffet place right next to the supermarket in the Kaufland mall once.

The Palazzo is simply awesome.  The prices are great even without the discount.  I loved the size and the quality of the food, I had a lasagne for 6.50 and a beer for 3.10 that left me barely able to move, something I wouldn’t have experienced even after spending 12 euros on the barbeque.  The second time I ate a pizza with peperoni on it and it too was very good.  They couldn’t deal well with the amount of guests though and they often confused tables, but if you told them you want to separate the bills at your table eventually and that you have a discount, they managed to do it.

Wenzel is right next to the little square where the wine festival was (the one with the funny fountain the fursuiters occupied last before going back in to the Maritim).  It’s a Czech restaurant, and though it’s slightly more expensive than the Palazzo and doesn’t give any kind of discount, I can recommend it because it has very tasty food.  I had a Kulajda (a wild mushroom soup, a cup for 3.80) and some gefüllte Knödel (7.50) – both of which were really good.

The Steak House: HORRIBLE. We went there with about 12 people. The prices are pretty cheap for a steak restaurant, but the waitress was 1. unfriendly 2. obviously annoyed and 3. bitchy. Someone of our group was surprised to have an orange in her ginger ale, the waitress said this is how it's supposed to be and then the girl of our group raised her eyebrow - unintentionally - whereupon the waitress asked in the most bitchy, arrogant tone why she raises her eyebrow like that. During the evening she continued to be arrogant, took EVERYTHING we said personally and made sassy comments. I have never ever encountered such a behaviour ever before. Nobody gave her one cent of tip, so she followed us outside to tell us we could get a free coffee if we want. Yes sure. After that we never went there again. *shakes head*

The italian restaurant: VERY yummy food. Good prices. The waitress was a bit overwhelmed with such a large group (about 12 people) and seemed also a bit annoyed. (she sighed LOUDLY when she came to our table to write down the orders) But all in all we got our food pretty fast and as I said it was very tasty.

Qilin, the asian restaurant: The food was simply amazing. I've never had asian food that was so tasty ever before. BUT ... the waiting times were horrible. We spent more than 2 1/2 hours there, most of the time waiting for our food. The waitresses were nice and friendly, but sometimes forgot to ask if we'd like to have something more to drink while waiting. But the food was so great, we went there 3 times. Also because of the 20% discount.

The croatian restaurant right behind the asian restaurant: Very tasty food, very friendly waitresses, we got our food in quite a short time. Awesome!

We mostly used the Steak house as it was about half the normal priced stakehouse of Helsinki and the quality was alot better and I mean alot better :P

The waitress understanded english which was big plus and even our little rusty germany was perfectly understood, like swapping with those mushroom gravies to other ones.

For this kinda place in Finland you'd need to pay atleast 20euros, no kidding.

Big plus for Steak house from me and Werewolf.

Pizza hut let us down. Dont try Bionade drink or the Maltsoda, you gonna puke. Also the Texas barbeque pizza tasted like asian food!! It should taste like american?

Well minus for the 1hour+ wait for pizza which tasted bad and the drinks
one plus for that they gave free Coca-cola as the Bionade wasnt for our taste.

You know, the waitress suggested to taste Bionade as I asked is there anything with alcohol that is like Sider or Longdrink there
and second time we went in and I asked malt beer, he gave me the non alcohol malt drink..
Prices were okay there so 2 stars out five for that

Wednesday: Palazzo (Italian next to the hotel) with a group of 8. Discount given without having to ask for it (badges were visible though). Service was a mixed bag: some friendly, some grumpy. Our main waitress not willing/able to speak English, and (it being our first day) our German rusty. Food arrived on the slow side, 4 of us were happy with it (steaks, chicken dishes), 4 were disappointed (pastas, and schnitzel). For dessert the ice and apfelstrudel were good, tiramisu was a prefab sham.
Certainly good value for money, but the impression they gave was that they weren't prepared for these kinds of numbers.

Thursday: Asteria (Greek behind the hotel) with a group of 8 again. Discount given without asking for it, badges not visible. Service was fast and very friendly. Food arrived a tad on the slow side, but free appetizers and digestives given. All had either mixed grill or giros platters, excellent quality but huuuge portions. (I'm usually the group's garbage bin, and there were still 4 plates taken away only half-finished.) Desserts were again big, decent quality, but unimaginative.
By my hometown standards still very cheap, from the local restaurants we tried the most expensive, but still excellent value for money if you can finish your plate. Recommended on all counts.

Friday: La Piazza (Italian behind the hotel) again with 8. I'm a bit hazy if we got a discount or not, sorry. Service was good, and friendly, but they clearly had more eye for the group of a dozen 50+ ladies at the next table. (It's ok, I forgive them - those are the best tippers, I completely understand.) Food arrived slow for the amount of guests they had, but well within a decent time. We had a mix of pizzas and pastas, and one escargot. My pasta was excellent, everyone else seemed happy too (though how can you trust people that shun fresh basil?). For dessert we had either crepes or tiramisu - but real, honest, actual home-made tiramisu!
A+ for real tiramisu alone, good value (again) and nice food. Especially recommended for some lighter or vegetarian food after gorging on Greek the day before.

Saturday: Palazzo again, group of 4 12 8 10. Different staff, friendlier but slower. Made no hassle about people leaving early and paying seperately, and working out the remaining bill at the end, though. One of us ordered the same as on wednesday, and got a very different variation on it. We ordered very varied, everyone seemed happy with their food (or should I say, this was day 4 of the con, and I usually have maybe 1 drink a month at home).
As before, good value for money, but not the best food you've ever had.

Bingöl Döner Grill : Not too bad, though a bit heavy on the sauces. Good sized portions.

House of Steak : First time we tried to go there, they were rather brusque and bordering on rude. Said they had no tables, and said we couldn't wait. Second time was on Sunday early evening with a much larger group. Waited around 15 minutes and was generally good. Food was quite good (Pfeffersteak... *nom*), though a couple of people had to wait quite a bit for their food.

Schnitzel Temple : Fairlight's already covered this well - I was in that group, and on the same table as doco to see him eat all of that!

Alex : This place we kept going back to. Good service. Good prices. Good food... and a stone's throw away from the Maritim.

I got good Indian food in the Alee Center behind the hotel.  The food was quickly served (mall type food court) and was delicious...got a complete entree for about 7 Euros.

The Tsing Tao restaurant had good Chinese food...for the group size we had we got served quickly...but it was on Sunday, and they had no other group but us!
