Title: International snack exchange - Stroopwafels
Post by: gwyndolium on 06.07.2011, 23:50:34
EDIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :

Maybe we should see if we can find some room somewhere so everybody can enjoy a little taste, maybe only a bite or sip, of each others things? Is this a good idea?

...

Since alot of people seemed interested in this I thought about opening a topic about it.

What's the deal?

It's very easy. I'm from the Netherlands and will be buying in loads of packages of stroopwafels. Not for myself of course but for whoever wants to have or try them! The only catch is to trade it for a typical treat from your region/country which can be anything. This way we all get something new and exciting to eat and it's an awesome way to make new friends!

Whoever feels like getting a package of stroopwafels at EF?  ;D

We got pretty excited about this topic a moment ago – question, seeing the Handkäse mit Musik, which doesn't seem like a snack in the strict sense… anyway, would you like some (and would it be okay to bring some) non-snack Hungarian stuff besides the snack ones we'll try to bring?  Thinking about kolbász and cheeses but other things might come up too.

Spill it, what would you want to try from Hungary? :)

I have no idea about specialities from hungary. And of course it doesn't have to be a snack. Anything you think is worth tasting you can bring. Just don't make it too hard or expansive on yourselves ;) Wanna be on the list let me know!

If there is enough animo I wouldn't mind looking into getting a place where we can all trade things with each other. Got to see what can be done.

I can bring this;

Wikipedia (dutch version only, I'm sorry) : http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinaert_%28bier%29 (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinaert_%28bier%29)
Reinaert is available in Amber, Tripel and Grand Cru.
Or this;

Homepage : http://www.brouwerijlupus.be/en/index.asp (http://www.brouwerijlupus.be/en/index.asp)
Although the wolfbeer is in my humble opinion not as good as the foxbeer.
I will trade this beers preferably with beer/beverages/food with a foxlogo on them.
This Australian 'Arctic fox' beer fe is high on my wantlist:
I can bring other belgium beers aswell off course, just ask.
Mind that due to limited travel space I can't bring lots of it, and like said, trades with beverages and food with a foxlogo have my preference.

PM me if you want some and have something nice to trade for it.

Also asked this question on my first post.

As i understood it, it's a SNACK exchange (food), not a alcohol trade (or liquid)...

(I won't be bringing alcohol anyway (as i don't drink alcohol))

I'd hate to see people get wasted in such an occasion, personnally...

Don't worry cookie. If it gets this big as I think it's getting then a sip or a bite of different things will be what's on the menu. You can see it as tasting whine. It's not to fill your stomach or get drunk it's to socialise, get to experience new things and enjoy a good time.

Now I just got to see how to put this many people in one room and not getting confused!

Good idea to ask for a panel room or something?

We could do it like this: every person (or group) who wants to represent a country (or a region of a country) gets a table. You can set up your table in a variety of things you want to bring, and show and tell about your country: posters, photographs, a map, the flag, tourist leaflets of things you can do, contactsd of furry organisation etc. etc. and of course the food, which the others can try.
If you want you can stand by the table and explain/talk to others (who walk around like on a market or a fair) or you make it self-explanatory, or perhaps two or more people from the same country take shifts in presenting...

So you would need a big room and set single tables along the walls, while the center is free to walk, greet and meet.
If that evevt grows to big/official, we should prob. clarify the food situation with the hotel. It is necessary to point out that the purpose of the event is not to get stuffed, but the food beeing a way to share a bit of the culture, and the portions will be little.

I carried out this "International market" already a couple of times, it works quite well.
Of course, this goes way of the original personal "food exchange" idea, but as there are more and more people interested, I think it is a good solution to get organised.

Hi there!

I can offer you a room for this social event, starting from 20:00. Please choose a day: Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

There goes a guideline along with it: keep the amount of each snack you offer for tasting to one that the hotel does not find questionale to the point that the management will start to argue about such like "we offer food to our guest that wasn't discussed with the hotel beforehand"... if you get what I mean.

Also, I need:
- A title for this event
- A description for the conbook

TO events@eurofurence.org

ASAP (until today evening would be nice!)

As the only furry from my country attending EF (out of all three of us :P), I probably won't be able to man the table most of the time, but I like this idea! Hopefully I can get my table-neighbor to watch over the dates to make sure everyone's sharing nicely while I'm off tasting the other snacks. :3

My brother once brought some very sweet stuff from the UAE, not sure if the food actually originated from there, but it sure was middle-eastern (deadly amount of honey :P  actually pistachios coated with something and honey, they looked like mini-cakes).  Anyway, do you have some sweets in SA that you could bring?  Dates are not particularly my favourite thing, but I'm curious what else is common there.

Hmmm.. On the other hand, is there anyone from Iceland coming to EF and this little event? :D  Bring some salted dried fish :D  (To challenge the Belgian cheese in smell :P)

Because it will be tasting only. I'll update you guys shortly after I've arranged the room and come with the further details about the event. It won't be eating to your hearts content but just getting a piece/slice/bit/sip of what's there and socializing. If you want to eat your belly full you are not at the right place here ;)

Stay tuned!

Humm, we call rodizio here when you go on a restaurant who do it, like  ( pasta rodizio ) , they serves a lot of types of pasta, or (pizza rodizio)  a lot of types of pizza
you can have many types of rodizio since the food in question have many preparation modes.
If no one ask for something from here, will try to find something taste that you can't find outside here to share :3

I do want to note that before everybody invites himself and sets up tradings that this event will probably have a limit to the amount of people who can participate. We will have one room for it and it will go on a first come first serve basis. After I got the room arranged I will contact everybody giving them the final details. I will keep the main post updated when I get more details so keep track on it in the upcoming days.

*Woof*

Please don't bring strong smelling food (or beverages) to that event. We had some furs with cheese (it was from Switzerland if I remember correctly) at the Ringberg Hotel. Though the cheesed tasted very well, three levels of lobby were smelling so badly, that one nearly wanted to puke. Also the hotel crew wasn't too pleased. As far as I know, nothing 'bad' happened, but I could imagine, that the Maritim might charge EF some additional cleaning fee or something... So please, no smelling cheese or fish.

Also, the following is very important for anyone not from the European Union. You may not bring meat or anything made of milk (yoghurt, cheese, ...) from outside the European Union. Also there is some regulation about the amount of alcohol. I would advise everyone to check with the duty regulations before bringing something with them.

Finnish licorice eh???? *barfs*

Actually the finnish fruity candies that i got with that custom pony thingie (the ones in shape of spades, hearts etc were not that bad, so those i'd like.. but the licorice.. *yukkkkk*

Something from Netherlands in exchange for belgian chocolate? Mmmh... cans of red or green Fernandez or vla (any flavor but especially caramel and vanilla or vanilla with little balls of chocolate inside - the one with the witch on the packaging).. that should do it..

Since some people were wondering.

You aren't forced to stay till the end. After it starts you are free to go. Of course I would like to not see everybody leave in 5 minutes but you aren't chained to this event. You are free to go where you want.

We don't have those here except heavily overpriced in import shops, and I think 'here' is 'Europe' and not just 'the Netherlands'. Which is a real pain because I think they are amazing (especially the brown sugar and cinnamon ones).

Sadly, they're not as good when cold and I don't think I can bring a toaster (nor microwave). So I'm not sure if they're fit for the snack exchange. Still, if someone could bring some, I bet you could make a lot of friends that way and I'm willing to at least give you something in return. =3

As far as I know the event will not be on the friday at all. But for now the list is already full. I give some people some extra days to reply. If not I'll send you a pm with further details if you are still interested.

Goat cheese anyone?
I'd bring some mead, but bringing liquid on a plane is a hellmare.
Did bring 3 liters at Furtastic though, man we were so drunk back then.

Hey,

I <3 cookies : D and I also <3 bananas.
Is there someone who can organize me a box of "Banana Split Creme Oreo"? I read at wikipedia that they were only available for a limited time in 2008. I guess that's right so I don't make myself big hopes for them  :(.

But I would also be incredible happy about the "Double Stuf Golden Oreo" cookies.

In Germany we have only a limited collection of them and I never see them here.
Therefore it would be great when someone can do me this little favor.^^

Greetings Tragger

Just received a package from my cousin:

(http://pic.phyrefile.com/c/ch/chaos386/2011/08/08/dates.jpg) (http://www.phyrefile.com/image/view/uUds9IPNkfdIKPTK)

Unfortunately, they're from last year, as this year's crop won't be ripe until after EF, but dates keep well, so they're every bit as tasty as fresh ones! (just not as soft) :)

Can't wait to taste the chocolates, cheeses, pickeled crisps, dates, egg/suggar mix, pepper/onion/paprika mix, chocolate liquor, waffels, salmiak, tea pastries, hobnobs, peanut crisps, chocolate cake, baby beans, coffee bars and all the rest I forgot again  ;D

Can I say I'm friggin' amazed in how awesome and excited you people are for making this event even happen!?

WITHOUT YOU GUYS THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED!

It was way more awesome than expected and way more people came and brought way more than expected! I'm really amazed and this needs way more preperation and attention next year because it's awesome and deserves proper time to prepare. So I hope that it can be done on a less.. let's say... last minute setting :D

Again thanks guys for making it happen even though it was all so messy, chaotic and last minute.

I tasted all the snacks! :D

This really was a wonderful meet, and one of the highlights of EF for me.  It's amazing such a meet never happened before, because with all the guests from so many countries, it makes so much sense.  I think next year it will be truly epic indeed.  Thank you very much for organising it and tasting so many crazy things for us :D .  Are you addicted to pickled onion monster munch now? ;)

Can this really be an official event next year? Or is the fact that we're bringing in food to the hotel and that it's not really "furry" mean it will always be unofficial?

Regardless, I had a great time trying out all the other snacks, and I had multiple people tell me they didn't like dates, but loved mine, so I'm happy! :D (I was expecting that, though. The dates you can get in Europe and North America aren't picked correctly!) Also, I was surprised that we had a couple fursuits join us in our den of sticky, gooey madness!

I was all prepared to go and had stashed enough American beef jerky in my suitcase for 20 people.

But that suitcase did not arrive with me in Berlin, and so I had no jerky to offer on Wednesday night.  :(   The suitcase did not arrive until the next day, when I had no choice but to give all of the jerky to Cookie.

I know it's annoying to come from my part but I would like to ask to not use this as a request topic.
I know it's very close to what I'm trying to achieve but before everything is settled and done these kind of replies don't fit here.

I'm sorry for being rude on this. This happened last time as well and alot of that trading went behind the back of this event, which is why I rather not have them in this topic.

There is a Danish company who makes banana flavored marshmallows covered in chocolate. Are these sold in other countries in Europe?
If not I will bring some.

Ohh and I have a strong love for chocolate combined with licorice, which I could also bring. marabou have just released a limit edition version with this.

I was eyeing some Old Amsterdam in the Tesco a few days ago.  Didn't end up buying any (it's crazy expensive here, somewhere around 9000 HUF per kg), but ended up bumping into something similar, called Old Dutch Master (which is only about 6000 per kg).

Thanks for introducing me to OA last year :)

If it's any consolation, even in it's country of origin it's one of the most expensive brands of Gouda cheeses. ;)

What you're referring to are actually "mergpijpjes". These (http://www.vandijkbanket.nl/files/productfotos/Chocolate/19bokkepoot_mg_0480.jpg) are "bokkepoten" ;).

Dammsugare have different filling than mergpijpjes though:

I wish I'd remember.  I think the people who brought it, were a couple and they live in Germany but one of them is Italian so he brought some of this stuff.  I think the other things nearby on the table were prawn/fish something on bread?  And in the other direction there was Sinea's 120% Chocolate Cake.

As for me, I know the Karaván cheese was well received, as was the lecsó, but since I (once again) won't have any kind of cooling appliance for days before the con, it will be quite hard to find something to bring that doesn't spoil.  It was why I couldn't bring Túró Rudi for you guys last time, I didn't want anyone to get sick because of my lack of refrigeration :(

This time we're also coming by plane, so it'll be doubly complicated.

I'll think up something... maybe I'll have my dad make some sort of cookies, those survive several days without cooling.

The herbal drink from Italy I brought was Chinotto :).
If the tasting is organised again, I would bring it along again - this time more (cause there was no other drink @ and people got quite thirsty) and different brands (to compare), if I can manage ;).

Okay, so someone should give us a suggestion of place to meet. Would have helped with that but I have never been to this hotel or even Magdeburg at all.

Alsoes, I heard something about swedish meatballs from someone. I'd love to, but I would have to buy them just before I hop on the train as they are frozen, and this also means they have to be fried.

Maybe there is a restaurant that makes meatballs nearby instead?

Please don't bring alcohol or any other beverages to this event. (Please also refer to my old reply in this thread (https://forum.eurofurence.org/index.php/topic,3065.msg29108.html#msg29108).) We're already quite stressing our limits with the hotel for allowing something like this event. : )

There will be some wine panel this year where you can bring something along. I'm not quite sure, but I think for that event EF will have to pay a fee to the hotel ("Korkgeld"), which is not just a few Euros.

Well, me and Kiantis were really interested in the wine tasting panel, so we were thinking about bringing some wine to EF. Fact is we would like to know how much we are allowed to bring, since there are a lot of different varieties of wine :p

Ok, nice :)
Last year it was not an open thing, you needed an invitation, that's one reason why I asked ;)

@ beverage: last year, I was the only person who brought two bottles of non alcoholic drinks. It was much apriciated by everyone, cause after trying 5, 6, 7 different sorts of food, it was nice to have something to wash your mouth clear.
So is it ok to bring  just a little amount of non alcohol? Or could we at least have some tab water at the venue?

I'm less interested in the general rule than in its application to my specific offer, and I wanted to make sure there'd be no misunderstandings. There is no need for sarcasm, especially in response to questions made in good faith.

Anyhow, I suppose this does clear things up, so thanks for that at least.

Okay, just discovered a few days ago that this thread (It's the longest thread on the whole forum WTH!) was still running and that it seems that the event has been placed upon the roster of EF 2012 on the upcoming friday somewhere around 12-ish.

Now I do want to let you all know I never planned to go on with it this year because I could already hardly handle it last year as people are too excited and the room was pretty small and now without saying a thing it was planned in again. To be fair I'm quite afraid of this.

HOWEVER

I don't really think it would be fair to cancel the event, even though it's not prepared at all by me, as some people already bought in certain snacks I figured.

So what I will do is check on the room as mentioned in the booklet and see how populair it'll be. If enough people show up I'm willing to do a word at the event and get it all started like last year though don't expect a big preperation. It's you guys that make the event succesful, not me.

However I will cut it off just before the start of the dance contest as I want to attend that one, and I bet I'm not the only one. (which is about an hour or more after the start of the event)

Hope that, just like last time, you guys are super excited and make the event roll on itself just like the last time so everybody has an amazing time!

p.s. you can always poke me on my e-mail or at the con.

Sorry for the double post but I need to post it here.

Thanks everybody for making this happen!

I had no time to prepare this but even so you guys again brought the amazing and made it all happen.

Just a bit sad the box didn't make it to the auction. We really tried and hoped it would happen. Maybe something for next year?

I liked it very much. Especially that some had the foresight to bring beverages and that the italian panel had snacks from "real" food.

The shame about it tho, is that events take place at the same time, so I had to choose one to attend.

Sadly you always have that with panels.

I couldn't be there (conflicting times with the Dealer's den opening) but i hope my Belgian chocolate was welcomed (gave it to someone to be brought in the panel)...

Thanks to all for this panel again! I think this is great event and it was both fun and interesting to chat with people and try out weird looking and tasking foods and drinks and candies.

It was welcomed, and good :)
