Title: No Smoking on Die Bahn
Post by: SouthPaw on 03.05.2007, 19:33:35
Hey folks,

Thought some people may be interested in THIS STORY (http://www.spiegel.de/reise/aktuell/0,1518,480637,00.html) from Spiegel Online.

The basic gist of the article is that local trains will be non-smoking from 1st July, with long distance trains to follow from 1st of September.

Cheers,

Southie

All flights are smoke free, even intercontinental ones.
I have nothing against smokers but in such small rooms as trains where you cant hide from the smoke its a good solution.

Yepp. But anyway most smokes go to the traintoilet to smoke just because they can't stop for some hours.

Sadly, yes...A possible solution to that being to install a smoke detector in the toilet, and if anyone lights up apply the emergency brake, accompanied by a loud siren and announcement saying, "Someone's smoking in the toilet." ;)

But that'd be cruel...

Cheers,

Southie

Nice idea, but why disturb every other passenger with this emergency brake and all the consequences in terms of delays, annoyance, broken arms due to falling, etc. when you can just install a sprinkler, with little water, but a high sensitivity on the sensor. They can't even blame anyone for this, then :)

It seems that you were so engulfed in trying to be a smartass, that you completely failed to get the joke :)

That's just my, always trying to find a realizable solution with best results for all. Humor? what humor? ;)

But thanks for being so amiable.

Well, I don't think that the long-distance trains should become non-smoking, but just have a car that is smoking.  Mind you, I can really understand that it would be horrible to be a non-smoker and be stuck in that car.  But, being on a five hour train ride (like I was last weekend) and jumping off the train at a stop for a quick smoke because I will not smoke on a non-smoking train, it really sucks.

The vast majority of trains in the UK are non-smoking, and have been for some time, but the number of people who smoke in the toilets is unbelievable, even on short journeys!

Still...It'll be interesting to see what happens on 1st July, when it becomes illegal to smoke anywhere on a station in England (it already is in Scotland and Wales).

I guess some smokers will demonstrate that they don't want to follow that law and smoke whereever they want.

Smokers will have a hard life in the next years until someone comes up with a healthy cigarette which improves the lungcapacity or lowers cancerrisks or whatever.

Indeed good luck with translating that, I think I do get its meaning though.
One way would be to describe the meaning of those words.
I will take a shot at this one; I can't take any liability to the accuracy of this. :D

"arm" meaning both arm as well as poor(ly), and "bein" means leg
And "besser dran" meaning better off, but also means something like better attached.
"dran" also means something like ~at it~ as in "du bist dran" its your turn.
"bein ab" means something like, leg detached (apart).
So there actually are several translations possible, that's also the irony in it.

Phew, :P I hope that helps.
