Title: Big thank you to the fursuit team (Also complaints and feedback now ;-) )
Post by: Mystifur on 27.08.2013, 06:20:00
I just now returned from the Maritim, after breaking down the fursuit lounge.
(Spontaneous Dead-Dog-Lounge-Extension is always a suicide mission, but happy suiter faces are worth it :-) )

Before falling asleep for the next 48 hours, I absolutely want to thank my team for all the work they did.
And all the help they offered.
Kazzador, Jake R, Basil, doco, Wulf.. always there and working their behinds off, when everyone else was having fun at dances or party.
Many thanks to the extra setup helpers as well, and to security and paramedics for caring for our safety during all the events.

Last minute free bus tour to the zoo ?
Down-Town Fursuit-Parade with 6000 spectators ?
Round-the-clock-EFGreen-supply ?
Shopping-Center-Flashmob-Disco ?

Non of that would have happened without their volunteer work.

But more importantly, what do you, the attendees of Eurofurence want to tell them ?
Your positive feedback is what keeps them going. Your opinion helps us improve.. year after year.

The fursuit lounge was great. There was always enough dryer space, and eveything seemed well organized.

The only negative thing that comes to my mind: One evening (thursday or friday?) the drinks were extremely cold. Room temperature drinks are better for drinking fast without getting a headache.

PERFECT fursuit lounge & events ! Thank you (and thx for the sim card too).  :)

Agreeing with Jorinda here, I got some awesome support from the staffers of the fursuit lounge and the volunteers, especially during the parade.
Giving it was my first parade in my fullsuit, the setting up of emergency water-dispensers was a literal life-saver.
Withhout those two cups of that yummy green stuff and help from a security guy with a water bottle I would have hyperventilated,
I literally "swam" in my suit when getting back to the hotel (even as an otter that was hard).

Thanks a TON for doing this Mystifur and all those helpers and volunteers of yours, the help and work there during the parade, in the lounge and during the shopping-center flashmob was greatly appreciated, you guys are awesome! <3

But I'm curious, what exactly is that green stuff? It tasted somewhat like woodruff with lime in it, but then again not - really refreshing though, I want more of that stuff xD

I went to go eat dinner right when buildup started on Tuesday and by the time I got back the fursuit lounge was already mostly set up.
Nearly every time I got to the Fursuit Lounge this year to fill up some cups, Basil was just about finished doing exactly that.
Having ruined my back crawling around on the floor on Saturday, I went to bed before the Dead Dog was over on Sunday, and the fursuit lounge was still pretty much fully intact. When I got back to the Fursuit Lounge on Monday morning it was 95% empty.

In short: in my opinion, this year's Fursuit Support team was better than the already great teams of the past two years, by quite a large margin. I am already looking forward to next year.

But I'm curious, what exactly is that green stuff? It tasted somewhat like woodruff with lime in it, but then again not - really refreshing though, I want more of that stuff xD

It -is- woodruff - or "Waldmeister" in German. It's diluted with more water than the bottles ask for, which might explain why you didn't recognize it, but also why you found it so refreshing. ^_^

Aaah, I see - thanks for clearing that up mr. Otternoses-guy *hides my own* ^^
And because I now finally know who you are, also sorry for buying almost all the otternoses in the shopbox on the first day during my huge order xD

It was my first time suiting (I finished building the suit at the convention), and the support and help from random suiters, volunteers and Mysti himself, twice, was amazing. Thank you all for making it an unforgettable EF!

one amazing thing, even if it is very hard to do, would be to have showers next to the fursuit lounge.

Anyway, I think all the fursuit-releated events were all fine, from the first to the last, and the opening of the Lounge till the end of the dead dog party was a great thing!

Thank you staff!

- Wonderful management of drinks/snacks: always available, drinks were always cool and everything around the drinks/snacks was always so tidy. Thank you!
- Opening hours: I was so happy to see the lounge open at Dead Dog party. I know it cost you guys a lot of extra time and work so thank you very, very much :D
- A good eye on safety: Security and fursuit people actually at the elevators helping fursuiters. People...still...didn't listen, but the fact you were there is awesome.
- Despite fan-delivery issue, everyone was able to cool down even at peak hours. That is amazing!
- Clock next to the mirror :D Thankies!!!

Really pleased with all the supplies available to us fursuiters :) You look after us well!

One small suggestion: Would it be possible to label separate drying racks for hands/heads and feetpaws? Having people's sweaty shoes on the dryer where others wanted to put their head was a bit annoying.

This definitely deserves a topic of its own, everything was fantastic this year.

The fursuit lounge and the fursuit support is one big part of what sets apart EF from all other cons! The crazy drying system was used by everyone, the giant fans helped me cool down in just a minute and it was great to get a quick refreshment every now and then.

Thanks to all the people too who probably spent half of the con stacking cups into trays! ;)
And more thanks to the people supplying us with water at the fursuit parade, it was really needed and very appreciated.

I can hardly think of anything to suggest, except maybe one thing: Orange-flavored drinks next year ;)

Thanks again Mystifur and everyone else in the Team for their outstanding work.

The "empty cups into trays" was a great idea :)

Thx to Mystifur to solve all the hassle, created by the renting company.
Thx to him and his Team for maintaing the "Great FL" (tm) =^.^=

Whenever I walked into the fursuit lounge, everything Just Worked™. Even when there were a lot of people in the lounge (Like just after the fursuit photo), it didn't seem overly crowded.

I never used the drying racks or hangers, so I can't comment on that, but just having the opportunity to take the head off, have a cup of water and sit down for a few minutes, was nice.

My only complaint was one time, just after the flashmob in the mall, where some non-suiters were standing, blocking the lounge entrance while talking, and weren't moving when asked nicely. In that case I ended up forcing my way through. Then when on my way back out, they had moved between the two screens that blocked the lounge from view, again blocking the passage.

Perhaps some signs telling people not to do that would be an idea? It should be common sense, but I guess not. -.-

It's actually split into heads (the short stumps, so the rest of the head can rest on the table) and feet/hand paws (the long pipes with whisks in them). However, on behalf of someone I met in the fursuit lounge I'd like to second the idea of labeling them more clearly, as it was obviously not clear for many fursuiters.

This happened a lot -- Security usually told them to move (thanks guys!) but they'd be back in minutes ?_? I just shoved my way through every time hoping to get the message across but I am aware not everyone is willing to do that. Maybe make an obvious "don't stand around here" sign? It feels rather stupid to me personally as, hey, this is common sense...but if you have it on paper you have something to point them to.

Okay, just to get the open points out of the way a few replies.
But please take that criticism part to the feedback thread afterwards.
This one here is to make staff feel good about their work.  ;D

- One afternoon out of 6 entire days the water was too cold for one persons taste ? And that's the first thing you come up with for a thankyou ?  ;D Well, I'll take it as a compliment that you obviously did find yourself well taken care of the other 5-and-a-half days.

- Showers in the fursuit lounge ? Yes, I totally agree with you: That would be amazing. Let me put it this way: Not gonna happen! lol

- Non-Suiters and more signs: Yes, it happens that people are dickheads. And no poster or sign in the world is going to solve that. people just dont read or ignore them. You have 2 possibilities: Punch them in the face and push your way through. (Yes, I did just say that loud. Fursuiters have the right of way and they should make use of it with no hesitation.) or go directly to security AT ONCE and have them handle it. Everything else is just pointless.

This intermission was brought to you by the color green.

and don´t forget:
- seperated space with couches and a big-screen-TV
- a privat pool right next to the suitlounge just for suiters
- lockers for each suiter to put their stuff in
- a big safe with different lockboxes for articles of value
- a cooling chamber (like they got in butcher shops) for a fast cooldown
- a fountain with perfumed water to make the lounge smell some better
- a buffet with fresh fruits for refreshing
- a dryingsystem with one blower per suiter to attach bodysuit, head and paws to, to not being forced to seperate all your stuff

it was sarcasm, but if we could get that stuff, I would love it :P

OK, it happened.. again..

since everyone seems so eager to discuss problems and has genius ideas on how to improve things instantly after EF, rather then being happy for a few days about the free services that they got already...
Your wish is my command, and this shall now be the general feedback thread including suggestions and complaints.

Hello Suiters :)
I was one of the Member in Mystifur´s Team and i also would share a few thinks i would say.
Since you're saying this in public, let me get this straight, in public: NO. YOU. WERE. NOT.
(Now deleted original post has been archived)

If you were,
1) you'd have been involved in the planning of the lounge and already knew that every single one of your points was discussed, and is either NOT TRUE, or not possible
2) you would have actually worked there
3) you would have brought up these suggestions either before the con in the actual staff forum, or spoken to me on site, instead of putting it here, despite my plea right above to not do that.

You ma'am, are part of Tigerseyes Badge Team, because you explicitely said Oh-i-cannot-do-any-hard-labor-like-carrying-60-liter-water-kegs, i-do-not-want-to-built-the-dryer-system-or-break-it-down, i-cannot-carry-water-for-the-entire-parade, but still said can-i-please-please-please-be on-a-staff-position-so-i-can-get-in-the-lounge-with-suiters-to-help-them-with-simple-things.

- Shower´s and some basin´s anywhere around the Fursuitlounge would be an perfect idea (better Hygiene Situation)
And I'm sure you know how to do that in a hotel hall, right ? Please, enlighten us !

- Some changing room´s for "been ashamed" Fursuiter´s would be a nice idea
Yea, why didn't anyone of us think of that for the last 12 years ? Oh, right, because we did that and the only thing happening was that everyone left their stuff there and within 1 hour no one could use it any more because it was full.

- Some Sagrotan and more Febrezze (last year there where more bottles, if i remember right)
No, you don't. If this came from an attendee, I'd be surpised that he didn't see that there were both Sagrotan disinfectant AND Febreze on all the tables all the time. Coming from someone who even _claims_ to be on the team..what can I say.

- more constructions to dry the whole Fursuitstuff
Yea, I'll just use the entire stage area too, no ? We have about 3*60 dryer spots.. we only need 3*650 to cater for everyone. Sounds easy enough to me.

- some furniture´s to chill out (maybe more chairs would be a solution)
We want more chairs, so we can sit more ! We want less chairs, because they take too much room, and we fall over them all the time ! No, more chairs. And a Video feed for the shows! No less chairs, because the suiters need to be able to move in the lounge!

- bigger Straws (maybe the big one for Sangria, not that size for a cocktail cup)
Like...the ones that were there most of the time, except the extension day ? ..In the lounge where suiters can as well just take the head of, if need be.

So, to everyone else reading here: I'm extremely sorry for this rant. But that bold post was beyond me post-EF-stress-level-control and needed to be adressed.

_I really do_ apprechiate all your input and suggestions. We may not be able to use all of them.
Many things have already been tried and didn't work, or while solving one issue, created another problem. Many ideas require constant 24/7 surpervision or handling. And unless you're willing to spend your own convention time on this, there is the possibility that other volunteers don't want to either.
If we can improve things with _reasonable_ additional effort, and it doesn't cause other problems, we will very likely do so! So when you see a problem, you'd help us alot if you also have a suggestion how to solve that.

But sometimes, to us it just feels like Louis CK said in "Everything is amazing, and nobody is happy"
from 3:55 to 4:25 (or maybe even to 5:35, for some)

If you're ashamed/embarassed and just need to cool off: the fans the team gives us are so good, simply keep your head on, tilt it and enjoy direct airflow into the mouth/eyes.

I don't really like to go headless either but that's my choice and my problem, so my own hotel room is my 'secret' changing room and I just make sure to be 100% cool before I brave the elevators. Some things are just...your own issue, IMHO.

Tip for next year: I also bring my own Febreze/alcohol (disinfectant I mean, lol) and a fan for in the hotel room. The fursuit lounge is a much appreciated extra service for me, but they are NOT there to fix all of my unique little fursuiting needs. It is an excellent room to relax, cool down and recharge. Anything else I do in my hotel room.

I have to say, that I was pretty overwhelmed by the fursuit-lounge. It was my first time at the EF with a suit, so I was kinda looking forward to see that mysterious room. ^^

It was amazing... a great way to cool down in front of the big fan or one of the smaller ones, especially during the more... exhausting events. ^^

All the equipment was amazing as well, and the refreshments were well appreciated. ^^

So from me as well a big thank-you to the whole crew.

As a first time fursuiter I would like to thank the Fursuit Team for all their hard work. It is really appreciated to have an easily reached cooldown spot with lots of fans where you can take off your head without ruining the illusion and easy access to water and snacks that just magically refill all the time.

I would also like to thank the Fursuit Badge Team for making me a badge on the spot. This way I could stay in character when asked for my name.

Also I would like to thank our attendees for almost always making room for me in the elevators and generally being caring and helpful even when they were being run into, tripped over, tailwhacked and whatnot.

I take home many wonderful memories from my first convention experienced from the inside of a suit. The heat is sooooo worth it.

Well, as "not anymore" team member I still went in every now and then - just to have a look if everything is fine, or if some trash or collapsed suiter is lying around or something needs to be refilled - but always everything was just fine - awesome job in an awesome lounge! You guys rock!

I think I just don't comment on "showers in the lounge"... I'm out of words on that anyway...

@Cheetah:

Hey there!

Despite our traditional internal "disputes" about who handles what at the parade, I nevertheless must speak up here and congratulate the tiny-ish team that does Fursuit Support for their excellent work in the lounge. No need to go into detail, as others already did that, but I'm amazed how well the lounge worked out again, despite last-second fan availability problems and the huge onslaught of suiters. *claps slowly*

Truly sorry I joined in on that earlier, I forgot what the topic was and just read the 'Feedback' in the breadcrumbs up top... ^_^'

Regarding the missing chairs: they might've stood next to the clocks* and fourth water barrel that were also missing. Those were clearly marked as well for as far as I know. I did hear something about there being problems with the storage location that were out of our hands. So I am not sure, but at least there's reason to assume the donation wasn't simply discarded or ignored. =)

Some other things that were mentioned to me in the fursuit lounge, just to get them out of the way:

* (I bought the 'new' clocks that were in the FL this year in the Kaufland on Thursday or something after being pointed out the lack of clocks. Please, if anyone ever sees a minor thing like that they feel is missing in the fursuit lounge? Tell a fursuit support team member. If we think it's a good idea and we can fix it right then and there, perhaps we will. ^_^)

1. I can truly say that for me, this years Wednesday was the very best 1. EF day ever! The zoo event + the flash mob just rocked, and were both really well organised:
- loads of drinking water in the zoo, a guarded changing room, creating a compound with suiters, well chosen parade route, beeing spontaneous about the bus trips back to the hotel to satisfy all suiters, building a "follow me" sign in case furries had to use the tram, advertising the event so that visitors came just to see us... what can I say? Thank you so much for it!
- enormous security support when walking to and within the shopping centre, excellent choice of music to perform and dance on, getting 500 bucks for charity out of it, having our own escalator... wow! Big round of applause!

2. Congratulations on the fursuit parade. First, I was shocked by so many spectators, but when the walking areas became more spacy I really enjoyed all the attention and thus the positive feedback or general notion of the fandom:
- Advertising it early and broadly was a good thing to do!
- I always felt secure and taken care of, no matter how deep the crowds or how broad the roads.
- I was offered a good supply of drinking water and straws when I needed them, thank's guys! Could not have done it without you :)
- Again, the route was wisely chosen: suiters who were not able to walk the entire round could easily take a short cut back to the hotel

3. Fursuitlounge: The effort you guys put into that room before, during and after the con just leaves me speachless. A++ from my side, and a humble bow on top of that. You rock! Please keep up your outstanding work!

This was the first EF with a suit for me. In general my impression has been overwhelmingly positive. food (salty AND sweet) was always there, water and EF green always there. fans working all the time. properly LONG STRAWS available at all times.

Yes, sometimes the drinks were colder than what I would call "comfortable" - I just drank them slowly :)
One (maybe) thing that could be improved: operating the taps for the drinks. I know I could have asked some humans to help me, but I just did it myself every time, and often I was afraid of not being able to close the tap in time and/or not being able to easily open it completely. (as I said, it was just a VERY MINOR annoyance)

I cannot really comment on the drying system as I never used it (I had some smaller fans in my room), but it looked awesome :)

having EF green and water during the parade was kinda unexpected and very appreciated!
maybe next year you can put some "refreshing stations" in fixed predetermined places in the parade (and advertise so in the posters/leaflets), so that suiters know that they will be taken care of.

big thumbs up to the fursuit team!

Even though I've already commented on the general feedback thread, after seeing all that discussion here I'll repeat myself and issue a huge thank you to the Fursuit team and everyone involved, you folks did an amazing job! Given the amount of Fursuiters at the convention (~650? More?) it's saddening that only a fraction takes the time to stop by and say "thank you".

Maybe I look at "conventions" in a different way? When they're small, they're a gatherings of people with common interests, some volunteering to make it happen, and everyone paying their share (money, yup!) to cover the costs required to make the event possible, just like you hold a barbecue and everyone contributes something of their own; some salad here, some drinks there. Just because this convention is noticeably bigger than a BBQ meet in the park doesn't mean the spirit changes and everything automatically turns into a paid service. What's volunteer work is still volunteer work, and if you'd only get "what you pay for" I fear EF would be a rather boring event.

Yes, the dryer/hanger slots were used up rather quickly, and it was difficult to get one; I was happy when I did, and the day I did not find any spare ones I took my suit into my room, opened the window and hung it up on a regular coathanger over the window frame, and... it dried! More Sagrotan/Febreeze? Until the week-end I didn't even realize those were *provided* - I brought my own stuff, and assumed someone else forgot their spray on the table, which is why I didn't even think of using it, nor even consider the option that actually was provided for free (because those cost money, too, right? At least, last time I picked one up at the local mall I had to pay for it). As for all other "problems" (lack of filled cups, straws, too many obstacles, too many people), well... I'm pretty new to suiting and not that "pro" yet, so most of the time I had a friend with me who helped me out, solving all those little problems easily. They also took some awesome pictures and enjoyed themselves as much as I did, and in return I enjoyed inviting them for a drink in the evening. Teaming up is a wonderful thing; makes life much more enjoyable, matches the spirit of such a convention in my opinion, and everything is more fun if you're not doing it alone. If all one is out for is a personal walk of fame with all spotlights directed at them, not to be shared with anyone, then I guess a lot of those details indeed could use some improvements.

In closing, with no further sarcasm: Once again, thanks to everyone who made this happen. It's been a blast for me - and I'm looking forward to next year. :3

More Sagrotan/Febreeze? Until the week-end I didn't even realize those were *provided* - I brought my own stuff, and assumed someone else forgot their spray on the table, which is why I didn't even think of using it, nor even consider the option that actually was provided for free[...]

Good point, actually. Do we need to mark these as "provided for free by EF (but please don't take them home)" more clearly? That's another suggestion I was given by someone somewhere sometime (and again, I completely forgot who).

I soon have to get fursuit just to get access to fursuit lounge :D People are talking about EF green and how great the lounge is and how you get to know people there, that I feel I'm missing half of the con :)

Sure, we have a whole friggin' party in there :3 And the EF green is just another word for that awesome golf course at our disposal : D
- fursuiters need to relax every now and then ;)
Sorry, I couldn't resist! XD

Again, thanks for both. Saying thank you, and for constructive feedback.
If only everyone was as mindful, our "job" would be even easier :-)

Hm, let's try this.. I'll address one of the mentioned issues, and you, the attending community help us solve it :-)

Situation: Basicaly a fursuit lounge is a changing room with a blower and a water dispenser. ..Ok, Eurofurences lounge is a bit more than that ;-) Some acknowledge that, but most just take it for granted.
So.. first issue:

Febreeze & Sagrotan disinfectent:
Yes, they cost quite some money, and seeing it from this angle, I suddenly realize why people didn't notice they might be free for use. Pointing that out might help, yes.
Last year though I've put all 30 (!!) bottles and cans out, on the tables during the first day. So it was more obvious. The result though, was that 90% of the people just though "oh, there's plenty enough of it" and threw half full cans in the corners, under the tables or took them to their room.

Lotsa visibility: People take it for granted ---vs --- less bottles and people do not notice them any more

Well, I'm sure most of you do like the free extra service, but you now also see my problem.
Could a central "help-yourself-point" help ? it could, if people in masses we not unmindfull.
within 30 minutes the bottles would be everywhere in the lounge, or in private rooms... and almost no one would put them back.

So, dear community, please help solving the first problem.
We have about 20 more of them waiting for you.

Yours, GLaDOS err.. Mystifur.

P.S.: The green is a lie.

Febreeze & Sagrotan disinfectent [...]

The key is communication.

I'd say mark the bottles with a big green EF sticker that says "Free for use if you run out! Please keep on the tables in the fursuit lounge!".

When it runs out or people steal them - too bad, can't be helped. But I somehow doubt they will.
