last minute questions
« on: 25.08.2012, 05:27:52 »

i may be asking the most stupid questions ever that most likely have already been answered but...me, my brother and our mate have the early check in thing for tuesday but i just wanted to make sure if besides our ID (passports) do we need anything else at check in like a ticket or something to get our room keys etc and we are stopping off in eindhoven on both the trip there and trip home, we do have a german phrase book but none of us know much german (even if i did do a course on it in school, forgotton most, can remember how to count and say good evening), any advice on what basic phrases would be usefull?

sorry again if im being dumb or anything

The hotel reg is perfectly capable of registering English speakers - no need for German phrases there. I didn't quite get the connection between German phrases and the Dutch city of Eindhoven though...

In my experience, almost all of the shops and restaurants around the Maritim in Magdeburg are very friendly and helpful, and will try to serve anyone who speaks something that vaguely resembles English or German (let's say, at least those listed on the "Around the hotel" flyer in the con book). Last year, some even changed their shift schedule to make sure there is always at least one clerk available all the times who speaks English ...

If want to be very friendly, too, I believe the most important phrases are "Bitte" (please/welcome -- "Als U Blieft" for Eindhoven ;) ), "Danke / Vielen Dank" (Thank you / "Dank U Wel"), "Guten Tag" ("Good Afternoon" / "Gooeien Middag"), "Auf Wiedersehen" (Goodbye / "Tot Ziens"). We are guests of Magdeburg, let's behave as such :)

Schools in the UK are pretty bad at teaching languages since we don't start learning anything foreign until age 10, which is much too late to pick up anything useful. I can speak small amounts of German though, and I'm sure once I hear the accent and words being spoken the phrases will come back to me, as for most of us who are in the same situation.

Just out of interest, when do German schools begin teaching students English and other foreign languages?

It used to be at age 10, in 5th grade.

Nowadays they are sometimes starting earlier, but it is probably too early to say whether this works out better in the end, as we'll need to wait for those students to come out of school.

I started with Latin in 5th grade, then got English in 7th grade.

What really taught me English was when a video rental store opened in the US Army base near my hometown. They had all the movies I wanted to see on videotape before they would even be released into our cinemas. So I formed the habit of watching movies in their original language.

Here's a possible stupid question!

I do not have to pay for a room when I arrive, yes? I'm pretty sure I already have shortly after I registered. Nothing is blinking on my registration page.
