Hotel Room Door Signs
« on: 13.06.2014, 12:49:56 »

Hi!

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere - I had a look before posting it (and used the search function) and didn't find it. Hence this thread.

Some people at ConFuzzled didn't just print out an A4-sized commission of themselves to stick on their hotel room... but got a whole door sized bit of art printed, and stuck that on the hotel room door! Now, as long as the operation of the door isn't prevented, and the hotel room number remains visible, is it possible to have whole-room posters at the Estrel - would that be allowed?

Cheers,

-T

Ok, i got an answer from the hotel.

Door Signs are ok as long as people use removable sticky tape.

However they are a little afraid of the full door ones, so far they allow doorsigns up to Din A3.

Also, only clean artwork is allowed. And i mean that! ;)

Like every year I'll use this cue to remind our beloved attendees, that "clean" means clean. No suggestive contant please, no swearing or suggestive items like condoms please. :3

As every year, security does tours of the hotel corridors and will remove any inappropiate door signs and hand them back to the owners... ;3

Please keep in mind that we share the hotel with other folks that might be easier offended that we think.

That said, checking the corridors is a pleasureable tradition because of all the fantastic art on the doors. Please keep 'em comming!

Thanks for checking! It's a little disappointing they won't allow full door ones, but fair enough - there's a lot that can fit into an A3 poster after all :)

Also, we did have full-door signs last year at EF.

This sucks terribly, especially for someone who already commissioned a door sized drawing :(

Did the hotel explain why? can that be... negotiated?
What if we show them the artwork in advance?

The hotel already answered, and the biggest allowed size is A3. If you have commissioned anything larger, I'm afraid you will have to scale it down.

@kalaallitamaroq

Many Hotels allow no signs at all.

Commissioning a door sized picture without even asking if it would be allowed is a very stupid idea.........

I'm very sorry but this is a 100% self made problem of yours, its not the hotels fault and its not the conventions fault

Just an idea from a fellow attendee, here...

If you wish to show it off, you might consider getting a panel in the Art Show (that is, assuming that any panels are still available for purchase) and hang it there, on a NFS basis, for all to see!*

Myself, I have always missed seeing all the door signs and decorations because I never spend time cruising all of the hotel room floors and halls (and for some conventions, it's multiple hotels!), but if you paid an artist good money for such a large door sign, you must have wanted people to see it, and this may be your only option.  And if the artist who created it doesn't already have a panel, perhaps he or she might be willing to share the cost of one, just to show off their mad art skills...

...And you may still put a more appropriate-sized version on your door, to act as a location marker.

*NOTE: I may haunt the art shows of various conventions, but I haven't ever needed a panel myself; so I do not know which conventions charge for panels, and which offer them free to artists, in exchange for a percentage of the art sale price.

Again, I'm sorry that things turned not our for you as you expected, but I can only agree to Nightfox - it would have been wiser to ask first, like tungro did. At the moment there's nothing we can do to change the situation, and we think that the Estrel is acutally being very generous by allowing door signs at all.

I think everything has been said about this topic, which is why I'm going to end the discussion here and close this topic :)
