Travel Update: July
« on: 09.07.2019, 16:05:25 »

Hi everybody!

We're smack dab into July already and it's time for another one of those Eurofurence informationalirary things that seem vaguely familiar but nobody can seem to remember them afterwards. So, off we go!

I'm not going to rehash the whole thing about vaccinations, inhalations, documentations, defenestrations - you're supposed to have that stuff figured out by now! If you haven't you can find the lot in April's entry.

Travel restrictions to and from SXF

In mid-August, there will be a rail replacement bus service between Baumschulenweg and Treptower Park stations. This mainly affects travel to and from Schönefeld airport.

Please note that this disruption is not timetabled yet, so you'll be given connections with nonexistent trains at the moment. This should change at some point around early August.

There's three alternatives:

- either take regional trains to Ostkreuz and change there for S41 trains.
- or use the 171 city bus which goes directly from the airport terminal to Sonnenallee station (but needs a good 40 minutes to do so)
- Alternatively, use S45 trains to Köllnische Heide station, which is about 700m away from the Estrel.

Of course, if you feel inclined to do so, you can also battle the rail replacement buses, but it's really not worth it. In either of these cases, you should bring some extra time.

Overflow hotel shuttle
In case you don't remember from last year, our "official" overflow hotel is the andel's by Vienna House Berlin. However, there is no 'exclusive' Eurofurence rate this year (mainly due to extremely slow communications on their part), so feel free to use the booking portal of your choice.

Next to the Estrel Hotel, there's the Berlin S-Bahn station Sonnenallee. From there you can catch a train that takes 12 minutes to Landsberger Allee.  Trains are running all day except at weeknights between 1:20 and 4:20 (on weekends, the S-Bahn runs 24 hours).
The S-Bahn fare is €30 for a 7-day ticket.

This year will operate a nighttime bus shuttle to the general area of the andel's (so it's also good if you're staying at the Vienna House or Generator, which are literally across the street).
The shuttle bus will be free to use, but operate only when the trains do not run.
The shuttle bus will run at the following times:

Thursday 15 August 2019 and Friday 16 August 2019
01:30 • 02:30 • 03:30

from outside the Estrel entrance.

Train tickets

Discounted event tickets can be booked at https://www.estrel.com/en/convention-center/services-references/train-tickets.html starting from €54.90 for specific trains / €74.90 for a flexible ticket (the Estrel web site actually has an error in translation on that one).

At the time of writing, there may still be regular DB fares that - depending on your route and the distance you're travelling to Berlin - might be slightly cheaper than the Event ticket - however, the price will remain stable right up until EF, as the contigency allocation works different from other fares.

If you plan to make your travel arrangements shortly before the convention, this is a good thing to remember.

Also, there'll be Ferrero discount vouchers starting from July 15. Details can be found at https://www.nutella.com/de/de/bahnsinn or in participating stores. I haven't seen any details other than that they're €10 off the ticket price, which -usually- means they're valid for tickets of €49 and up. Please see the appropriate jar for details. (mmm, sugar and fat!)

Ridesharing Telegram Group

As we're having a growing number of guests staying away from the main hotel, we've made a Telegram group for you to congregate so you can pool to share taxis, minicabs, hire cycles or even go on foot!

You'll find the group here:

>>>> https://t.me/EF25rides <<<<

Note that this is a no-frills, no-bullshit, no-stickers *cough* group that will be deleted after the convention is over. For regular discussion, please use any of the many other EF groups on Telegram (you know, that one).

----

That's all for today. There may be some last-minute errata in August which we may or may not announce through the usual channels, but until then - see you at Eurofurence!
