fursuit-panel: build a fursuit-head live
« on: 12.07.2008, 18:33:37 »

Furvan and I did several Sigs about fursuit-building in general, head-making with plastic-mesh and animatronics. I got lots of positive feedback from these events, but also some suggestions for improvements.

Several people asked last time if I could build a fursuit-head live (with plastic-mesh) – so they can see how I really work – finished examples, pictures and vocal explanations don't work for everyone.

I made one fursuit-head before at a convention, and it won't take to much time if I prepare some materials (about 2 hours to build the basic shape with eyes, movable eyelids, nose and maybe teeth).
Just missing the fur - something like this one:

So, I'm asking:

  • Who would be interested in such event? (How much space will be needed)
  • What should happen with the head? (Who should get it? / How to decide for whom to build?)
  • What species should I build?

I'm not good at building fursuit-heads that can fit more than one head. Explaining and adjusting something on myself doesn't work fast – so the fursuit-head has to be for someone else – and that one has to be at the panel. Materials are ca. 60 euro.

Edit: renamed the topic, it's no longer just an idea.

Just an idea, put it into the Auction on Friday and have the SIG on Saturday?

That whould mean I can't prepare much, because I won't know the species before the auction.

Just do a poll here beforehand, perhaps in "General", and ask whether the most want a canine, a feline, whatever, prepare that beforehand and still auction it off. Remember how well Lance’ heads went? They came to ef ready, too...

Would be a really cool charity object!  :)

Loko thinks this panel would be a great idea. Its always good to actaully see how it is done, have the chance to talk to the maker alive and exchange knowledge and experience. So if you intend to really make this panel, Loko would be the first one at the door to the SIG-room. Wuffs!

Ok, I thought about it and I will do it.
This means: someone will get a fursuit-head - build by me - at this panel.

My only problem is that I have to decide for whom to build (and most important what species to build).
How should I do that?
I have to do that before EF - otherwise I can't prepare the parts (there is not enough time to build everything live).

I won't have much time before EF, so I can only prepare parts for one fursuit-head.

Feline or canine... Hard to decide. As a werewolf Id stick to canine - wolf head. But thats not up to me only. We would need a poll or something like it.

There are many more options. How about a hare, deer, crow,....

Canines or cats are easy, I could build something else for a change.

How about a gryphon head? That's what popped into my mind when listening to a 2 Sense episode.

There is always the possibility of building it for someone and having them pay for the parts and labor, or, just building it and putting it up in the charity auction.

Indeed probably a poll would give you some indication, somewhat like with Lances fursuit head; preferably  show a few examples of what you would like to make.
Then people can indicate their preference.

I won't be in Germany for most of august - returning just some  days before EF.
So I have only time to prepare the parts for one fursuit-head.

My fursuit-heads are always build for one person - If I would change this it would take me too much time to build it.
The plastic-mesh I use is not the same type of mesh that's normally used in the US.
It's much stronger and harder to bend - so wearing one of these heads can be very incomfortable (if not impossible) if the head is not build for the shape of your head.

And if you made it a little bit bigger, so as to fit it to the buyer with glued or velcroed in foam pads?
