Idea: Eurofurence Digital Queue System
« on: 02.11.2024, 02:14:57 »

I would like to propose a solution to the growing issue of long waiting lines at Eurofurence, which have increasingly become a significant challenge for attendees. As a long-time visitor, I have witnessed how wait times can stretch for hours, detracting from the overall experience. I believe that implementing a digital queue system could greatly reduce this problem.

A digital queue system would offer numerous advantages for Eurofurence:

•   Reduced Wait Times: Attendees could join virtual lines and use their time more effectively instead of standing in physical queues.

•   Enhanced Visitor Experience: Participants would spend more time enjoying the event rather than waiting in line.

•   More Space: all the blocked-up space that needed to be reserved for queue lines would be free.

•   Real-Time Data Analysis: Valuable insights into visitor flow and wait time patterns for future planning.

I suggest integrating the digital queue system directly into the official Eurofurence app. This would provide a seamless user experience and increase acceptance among attendees. The implementation could include the following features:

1.   Virtual Check-In: Attendees can sign up for various queues through the app (e.g., registration, dealer's den, main events).

2.   Real-Time Updates: The app would send notifications about current position and estimated wait times.

3.   QR Code System: Upon reaching the front of the queue, attendees receive a QR code granting them access to the desired area or event.

4.   Prioritization Options: The ability to set up VIP queues or fast passes for specific groups (e.g., volunteers, guests of honor).

For technical implementation, I recommend checking for an experienced queue management provider. Companies like Waitwhile and Qminder offer specialized solutions that may be easily integrated into existing apps. These systems are designed to function reliably even during high visitor volumes.

Introducing a digital queue system would elevate Eurofurence to a new level of visitor friendliness and organizational efficiency. It would not only reduce wait times but also enhance the overall convention experience for everyone involved. Let’s make long queues a thing of the past and create an even better Eurofurence experience for all!

I see several issues with this.

Beyond the usual "who is going to implement and maintain it?",

- how would we handle people who don't want to use the app?
- what if someone misses their slot?
- how do we mitigate against the massive SPOF this would introduce (i.e. the app)?

So yeah, nice in theory, but no.
