May be dummy question, but how important role alcohol generally have in event(s) like this? Is someone, who doesn't drink, going to be very lonely?

Well, it's true that the bar is a rather popular social gathering place, yes. But no, you don't have to be lonely. You can still be with your friends, and order some stuff that does NOT contain alcohol :) The bar has a very large selection of non-alcoholic drinks. And if you'd rather not drink anything at all ... the won't throw you out because of that :)

How lonely you will be depends on how social you are, what interests you have, with what kind of people you'd like to hang out with (and you are able to find them)

I've been to every EF (and MMC) since 2002, and I've never been lonely because of not drinking a single drop of alcohol. Honestly, the furs I hang out with don't even care. Sure, they are not the type of furs who just spend the night in front of the bar and get drunk, making crazy jokes and stuff. If you'd like to be around THESE kind of folks, well, being sobre can be a quick turn-off :)

Being someone who is usually quite reserved about alcohol, in my experience it hasn't been an issue. :)
So indeed, I think on account of that you don't have to be lonely.

someone who drinks  "way too much(tm)"  is going to be very lonely
first alone in his room/bathroom
second the next morning at home

so feel free not to get drunk and have nice conversations with new friends :-)

I don't drink at all... and I prefer cons with a low alcohol-per-person ratio. Here are the 7 reasons why:

1. The conversations make more sense, content-wise
2. The language people talk in is understandable, pronounciation-wise
3. You don't miss the con passed out in a bathroom corner
4. You won't wake up in the morning married to a sheep
5. You may find less "friends" but you will actually remember them afterwards
6. You will actually benefit from attending the panels and SIGs. Intellectual capacity be praised!
7. Your reputation will remain unscathed, especially if you're on a con for the first time and make a first impression on many, many people
7. There will be no sinister wolf on your tail threatening to push you into a cold shower to sober up
7. You don't need to pay extra for cleaning services
7. You will retain your ability to count.

Limiting the amount one imbibes on a con is an excellent idea!

Alcohol isn't a black-and-white thing, it's just a matter of regulating how much you drink for yourself. It can be a tremendous addition to an evening with friends, but if you overdo it, you're in hell - just like everything in life, moderation is key.

It's a real shame you got that affliction because German beer is really good tasting, but I must admit not worth that risk.

last EF someone offered me a "Bayerisches Weißbier" now you must know, normally I hate beer.
But curiosity made me accept his kind offer.
And now I must say, unfortunately (but of course as expected) I haven't seen it here in any shop. :(
I've seen canned versions of German Weißbier at the supermarket (Lidl incidentally), of course it's not the same but I might try it. ::)

Well, he didn't say that Dutch beer wasn't good tasting. Heineken, however, is a beer without any characteristics. Germany has mediocre beers, too: Warsteiner, Bitburger, Krombacher... But at least that's beer. Where I am right now people associate that soda pop called Bud with beer.  At least I cannot blame the folks in this specific state for it, as most of them do not drink alcoholic beverages at all. Yes, I am in Utah currently.

I bought a box of Heineken the other day (which, at least, is a beer,) just wanting to see what happens. The cashier demanded my photo ID (though she didn't for the other customer who was buying cigarettes.) I gave her my German ID card, which is another one of my practical jokes when I'm in the US: try to confuse them with weird documents. Much to my disappointment, it never worked before. Usually it is just one short look and that's it. But this lady was looking at the card for over a minute, then requested the passport (which has a very similar card), compared both cards for another minute, trying to comprehend, sighed and gave me back both documents. Hilarious!

I absolutely do not understand what people like about Heineken, I find it horrible.
But that is what is normally been associated with beer here in Holland, perhaps that is why I always said I didn't like beer.
It could be the same as with McDonald's: if you advertise enough people will seriously start to believe it's good.

Germany is a big country, so I would find it very strange indeed if it didn't have decent beers. I've had a few nice ones, but they tended to be smallbrews, from places I was staying at. Most of my german time tends to be spent with friends in Köln, though, so you can guess what they're trying to feed me.

They've stopped jeering at me not keeping up with them after I explained that I never drink large quantities of yellow water, and wether they'd like to hold a contest with beer of my choosing :-)

I'm halfway considering bringing my own beer, I'm passing at least two Trappist abbeys anyways. On the other hand, It might be interesting to get a tour of decent beers from our German hosts *hint* *hint*  ;D

i have no idea about how many brews there are in germany
but i like to remind of the oldest known law for foodstuff from 1516 where the contents of a 'beer'
is defined
therefore most of the foreign brews are not understood as a 'beer' for a 'real german beerdrinker'  *G*

since i belive i'm qualified to give a realy good advice on a beer (after 20years being a firefighter in germany)
here's my favorite:  it is called  "Torgauer Landbock"

despite the name it isn't realy a 'bockbier' , what stands for a usualy strong alc. content
it is more like an older beer in taste
meaning it 'fills' the mounth and is 'thick'

yes, it is from a brewery in torgau at the elbe river where at the end of WW2 the allied and russians meet at that famous bridge
nice town, lived near by,,,  even nicer beers :-)

oh sry i'm kinda like off topic here

The topic being 'Alcohol', you're hardly off-topic :-)

That's the Reinheitsgebot (sp) you're talking about, and imo it's well past it's prime - it was necessary back then, but it really stops german brewers from coming up with original stuff.

And what do you mean by 'high' alcohol content ? Everything is relative, and I'm Belgian, so used to 12% beers :-)

Ah.. Good ol' Belgian beers.  They can sneak up on you when you are drinking them, like Chimey (hope I spelled that correctly.)  But still, German and Belgian beers are great compared to the American ones.  I don't think I could drink an American beer if it was the only thing available, I would be sober. (Besides the fact it is almost impossible to get drunk on those things, have to drink like 12)

Eh, knowing me, I'd be willing to try one out, even if Red Bulls don't really do much for me (liar, they sure worked at the Twisted E when jumpstylin, lol).  How hard does that stuff hit a person anyways?  I'm used to downing half a 26/750 of vodka in an hour or two (well, okay, fine, three hours, I'm a little wonky if I do it in less than two hours).  Billiards, how i miss such...  Did well when I was in New Zealand, and now I suck, because everywhere all they have is light cues...  I miss the 28-31 ouncers....

I play with a 20 if I can get my paws on it.  But, I learned how to put a lot of power behind a 20 when I need to, but Jager go down pretty smooth, and don't hit too hard.  It's better then drinking it straight.  Also, when I am drinking to just have a good time, I take my time on them.  But, slamming them down is always fun as well.

Absynthe is as high as I go, sorry.  Or Black Label Smirnoff. ^_^  Everclear is for use when you're out of paint thinner/stripper as well as brake fluid, imo...  And speaking of absynthe, it's weird, proper absynthe is banned here in Canada because it has wormwood in it, but you can buy wormwood at the local pharmacy or drug store, over the counter, perfectly legally. o_O

Yup, and if you mix it with Red Bull, you have the energy to go all night... Until you get bored and start a whiskey drinking contest at an Irish Pub... I kinda remember that night.

i've had a drink made by Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott (R.I.P.)

- Jagermeister
- Jack Daniels
- Wild Turkey
- Splash of coke

One will get you drunk, its called A BLACK TOOTH GRIN, after the lyric from a Megadeth track called Sweating Bullets.... Isn't learning fun ^^

It was sort of like a jager bomb, but with something tastier - Rockstar Juiced.  More caffeine, more taste, same price (actually, they're always on sale 2/$5, as opposed to $3 a can for Jag ^_^)...  And they were taken about 20 mins apart...  As for whiskey, I'll never touch the stuff as I'm allergic to it (which sucks, because I want to try J.D. sometime)

As much as I'm embarassed to say it, one jagermeister will do in me right now....  Although by the time EF swings around, I'll be able to probably down half a dozen jag's, because I'll be drinking that stuff every week now (Sal's on 17th here in Calgary has a breaks/garage/jungle night, and the "cover" is $5 per person in drinks - coincidentally enough, a red bull is $5. ^_^).  That walk home last night was even more fun than going home from Noisia back in December complete baked (not even of my own will, there was a huge cloud of smoke in the community hall, lol)....

The only EF I drank something worth of calling it alcohol and it was the mead in the sponsors lounge (aaah... the good old time...) :).

I never had any problems socializing though. And The only EF I was not attending since then was EF 11.

So... hey... I would be a person who is happy about people that are not drunk.

Last EF some drunk person stumbled and fell on my leg, bending it sideways (OUCH!) oh and another drunk person shouted so loud into the ear of a lioness that she got a trauma (more OUCH!).

That is why I like a convention with not so much alcohol.

I'm going to control my drinking at EF. i'm not a problem when drunk anyway, I'm not violent, sad or puking. I'm pretty much the same, i only cause mayhem when i have gone waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay of the top, which is very rare.

WOW  ;D

and what brand do you like most? I drink Gambrinus or Pilsen mostly, but I maintain a strict policy "only one" wherever I go. I have a low activity of alcoholdehydrogenasis (an enzyme which breaks down alcohol molecules) so even two beer are enough to get me very drunk (same thing happens to Innuits and Australian Aborigineese)  8)

For an average person; one to get you in the mood, two to get you lightly drunk, three to get you severely drunk, four to get you seriously sick, five to get you into the hospital, six to get you into the graveyard.

Well, since it was only cheap tequila and the vodka will probably be Gorbatschov, its no waste at all.

It has never been that bad, neither at EF nor at MMC. People tend to drink a lot of alcohol, but they usually also know when to stop. You'll always have a handful of people who don't know how to behave, but these are less than 1% of the attendees.

Given the suggestions of "alcohol powder" or "nuclear waste" I very much challenge the knowledge of alcoholic beverages. A professional Bar Attendant - whom I don't think you will challenge his knowledge for obvious reasons - will most certainly have a smile and firm "No" to most of the suggestions here :)

And most certainly would suggest to try the lokal beer on location. I can confirm it is quite tastey.

We seem to get not so great imports here in Canada...  Absynthe that's lacking wormwood (and taste, lol), our Bols vodka comes in a plastic container and has insane amounts of sugar in it (literally, we jokingly call it 40% sugar here in the house), and Finlandia... this is not a bad drink, it doesn't make you sick, and it's soft in tast and for brain, would more be like for chilling :)
and it's inspired by a common drink here called "grolle" which is hot coffee, some very pure alcohol of fruit (apple or this sort of fruit) and orange zest then warm it up, wonderfull :)

You know you have had enough when the dutch beer Heineken starts to taste good :D... I prefer Diekirch myself, but I doubt they have that in Suhl...

As a Belg, I do not like Jupiler, in my opinion it's no Belgium beer anymore (the interbrew group is international and kills all traditional brewery's and beers in Belgium), if you want a very tasty beer that will get you quickly in the mood I highly recommend Duvel (www.duvel.be, part of the local Moortgat brewery and available in most foreign countries, even in the US and Japan).

Cheers ^.^

i was talking about a beer to just...you know....beer you can drink alot of without falling off you barstool after an hour. duvel i like indeed, but on special occasions, also grolsch kanon is quite...hefty, but a bit too sweet for my taste.

not a good idea though is drinking them both at the same time......*uhum* what i did last weekend *uhum*

Ok I'll try to explain, its like when you have a cold and your grandmother comes up with that big old brown bottle and a spoon... It tastes similar, only, this is WITH alcohol (unless your grandmother gave you Jägermeister anyway...).

A lot of people compare the taste to black licorice.  The first time you drink it, that is probably what you will end up thinking.  Of course, Jager mixes really well with most energy drinks.
Title: Re: Alcohol
Post by: Nightfox on 31.08.2007, 14:49:52
Jägermeister is a herb liqueur, made of 56 differnet herbs.
The big difference is that we store it for over a year in wooden barrels before we fill it ito the bottle.
It has 35% of alcohol.
As shot its the best to serve it ice cold, its also tasty as lonkdrink with orange juice, cherry juice, energy or even as cocktail.

Berenburg is a nice liquor made locally here, it is also made with several herbs, and mixes good with cola or pure.

Well, yeah, though in American English, "Professional" and "Master" are interchangable, but British English, they are not. (Professional = Of a profession, or one's profession.)

And since British English is the correct form of English, I deduce that Cheetah's translation is more accurate than my own. ^_^

Absinthe is one of those "other world" beverages... I'm not sure what its purpose is. Most people as I understand it drink to socialize, or to get a light "buzz" (which is a sign from your brain that your oxygen and/or water content in your brain is low). Is this "Absinthe" really dangerous?

Only if you drink too much of it for too long ( but thats pretty much the case with all sort of alcohol ;) )
The reason it has a bad reputation is because it was the only alcohol available in some back-water valley (because distilled on site) and some murder cases put the blame on people over-drinking it. So it was banned from store and labeled as a making people crazy.
Something like that.

edit:
it is pretty nicely explained there:

Yeah, no one really has even heard of Belgium beers back in the states.

Well we are one of the better producers...

At the "Bier tempel" here in Brussels we have more than a 1000 of different brews..

Maybe someone should "educate" the US people by opening a shop of Belgian beers there??

I have tried, mind you, saying no one has heard of them is actually a bad statement.  So people have, but it is mostly people that travel a lot.  Personally, Duval and Leffe are some of my favorite beers.

My Fav beer is Tuborg or Odin, but both of them are Scandinavian and I doubt you'll find'em outside Scandinavia :x

jupiler for the win.

anyway. both heineken and amstel are "slootwater" as we call it here.(means something like "ditch water) it got no taste.
try grolsch. now THAT is a beer.

I disagree on the Amstel part, but I agree on Heineken. But I still think Warsteiner (Germany) and Diekirch (Luxembourg) are the best!

The Belgian beers rule! Jupiler and Palm in particular. Also the Dutch beers like Bavaria en Dommelsch are quite good as well. But Heiniken... I'll only drink that if there's no other kind of beer to drink.

Anyway, what kind of beer is the best is and will always be diffirent for each person.  ;)

Don't you forget the CZ-beers!
The black Budweiser (Budweiser Budvar tmavý ležák) from Plzen (where the name Pils comes from) is just perfect!

Dude! Tuborg was about the first beer I ever drank. Our local co-op used to sell it cheap; something like 99p for four cans (but that was a LONG time ago). It pretty much disappeared from the market, so far as I could see, until re-appearing a couple of years ago as a 'premium' import beer.

I still remember the old "choo-choo, choo-choo, choo-choo, choo-borg" tv adverts.

*mmmm Tuborg - now I'm thirsty :p *

I have corrupted the locals, I went to the store today to get Jagermeister, and found out that they were nearly sold out, and had sold most of their stock just today...  I wanted others to share my joy for Jager, but not if I can't get any!!  Luckily, I found some, and me and it are kicking back and having a good weekend. :P

I'm planning on going down to the supermarket at the bottom of the hill and buying some bottles of booze and juices to make some of my custom cocktails, if anyone wants a try?
